Maintenance

Pro-Jump Forum Tutorials Maintenance

By: Spud

The most important thing when doing anything to your bocks is to have the right tools for the job. Not having them will make the job a lot harder. I learnt this the hard way so before you begin make sure you ahve the right tools. You never know when you might need to fix/adjust something so it's a good idea to have things before that point so you are not off your bocks for a week because you have to go out and buy tools

Tools needed

Here is a list of the essentials. You should be able to do do everything you need with these. It doesn't hurt to have some other tools around though

Tools to maintain your jumping stilts

Once you have all the tools you need you can then maintain your bocks. Its a good idea to check them regually and fix any small problems before they turn into much bigger ones such as the frame warping but there are a few things you should check regually to make sure they are safe to use before you bock.

You dont need to go tightening every bolt before you use them but it is a good idea to check for any play/wobbles/loose bolts. If you find anything loose then tighten them up. The pic below shows what tools are needed to adjust different parts of the stilts.

Parts to Maintain on your Jumping stilts
silicone spray

General Maintenance

It's a really good idea to check that all bolts are tight reguarly. Just go around all the bolts and see if you can tighten them anymore. Don't try too hard. If they feel tight then leave them be, over tightening can do more harm than good. It is also a good idea to use a lubricant on the joints/moving parts on your bocks to keep things moving nicely. If possible avoid using WD40, it leaves a nasty residue and is not as effective as silicon based lubricants. I apply silicon spray to the moving parts every few weeks. It's a really good way to stop developing any squeaks and will help keep the bushings going for longer.

white spacer

Problems

If you find your bocks have some play and it is not caused by the bolts that are loose there are a few things it could be. First check to see if any of the white spacers have fallen out. If they are still firmly in place the chances are the bushings are worn. You should be able to tell if this is the problem by tugging on the spring and feeling for movement. If the movement is bad then you should replace the bushings.

If you find that your bocks are squeaking then check the white spacer is in place and spray all of the moving parts/joints with silicone spray. After a few minutes of use the lubricant should have worked it's way into the joints and the squeaking will hopefully have stopped.

Check out the problems/solutions section of the forum for lots more info on common problems.

spring tape

Checking The Spring

It is really easy to knock and bash the springs about while bocking. That is why it is so important to protect the springs. Information on potecting your springs can be found in the modification section of the forum but if you have damaged your spring at all it is a good idea to see if it is bad. It most likely will only light damage if anything at all but checking doesn't hurt. if you have split the spring cover then you will be able to see the surface of the spring to see if it is damaged but if you havn't or want to look closer it doesn't hurt to cut open the spring cover carefully and looking at it. As long as there are no significant cracks or large amounts of splinters from the spring then they are fine. Recover the spring with gaffer tape and protect your springs better in the future. You can see that I have checked my springs a few times and recovered with different coloured gaffer tape. Now they are recovered they are as good as new and protected better than before.
