Make your own crash matt?
« on: December 14, 2007, 10:24:16 PM »
Hey guys n gals!

Just been searching the interweb for crash matts, and after finding i dont have £180(!) spare was wondering how easy it would be, and how much it would cost, to make your own!?

If this is a bad idea, what other options are there that dont cost a fortune!?

Cheers people! Tok

Sound like a good idea but if you don't get it right you could end up getting hurt.
And it would be also a better idea to find somewhere or one with mats to help teach you ? Even the best get it wrong !
Not to say if there a group of you couldn't do it ?

I use an inflateable mattress designed for camping but I dont use it primarily as a crash mat, and I wouldnt advise doing so at all.

I use mine as the crash matt we have is only 6" deep so we put the inflateable underneath it to give it a nice cushion as a 6 incher is not enough to say land flat on your back or tailbone without risking injury.

I'd definately say this is a no go. If you are going to do it, You need at least 3 of them on top of each other and they dont last long so you might as well just buy a proper crash mat or go find a hall who will let you use theirs :)

I managed to get some 4" foam for free from work (quite a lot of it actually) and have sewn up some covers for it out of those woven plastic tarpaulins that are so cheap and hard wearing

I made them about 4ft x 3ft and made 10 of them so I can lay them out flat or double them up to make a smaller thicker mat I also fitted eyeletsround the edges so I can tie them together (to stop me slipping down the middle of them)

Due to broken wrist and inclement weather I have only tested them by jumping up in the air and falling on them but they seem to work well

You can see a finnished one behind the PJ not verry big but when you jion 10 together they make quite an area an they can be stored in a pile in the loft or garage when not in use

Don't use fire extinguisher foam, it's more slippy than soft  ;D

Buying foam is expensive and unless you are handy with a sewing machine or know someone who is, I would say save up and buy a proper crash mat......or just find a gym that will let you use theirs.

They would work but if there were spring matresses it wouldn't be advised as there is a chance the spring comes through and goes into your back  ;D
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room!
