I'm using stainless welding wire at the moment which is thinner and totally free
Think I might stick to it as it will never need to be shone up and no rust
same as the washers but a lot cheeper

if they are already split its less time consuming though
But you are doing it the proper way which is an experience in itself, I tried making some then my dad told be I could get split washers so I jumped ship

Tried the wooden jig method today took some getting used to but once I got it right I got as much done in an hour as took me 3 hrs before
Also I have started cutting the rings off with sidecutters instead of the dremmel and they are easier to close
