Title: Hoofies what do you think
Post by: Jason on September 09, 2007, 08:15:46 PM
I have been working on a quick change hoof cover for a while and I think I have got it right at last

They are attached with a velcro strap (to be modified slightly) and can be fitted or removed in about 2 minutes

Oh and they are made of the rubber I used at Capital bocking so should last well

They look really cool. One of the things I don't like about tyre socks is if its not a neat job they look tacky but these look really cool.

Let us know how you get on with them

Thanks Naz
I've had a bad case of man flu for a week so not much bocking and the sister in law gets married next friday
I'm hoping I might get 10 mins to try them one evening but I've got to be careful as turning up to the wedding in plaster won't go down well  ;D

Looks a lot better than clips and sticky tape  ;D
Just one thing  :-\
Where you have the 'Hoofies' sign are you not scared that if you drag you hoof that it'll slip off ?
If you added a extra blue strap from the back of that sign up behind the other blue strap wouldn't that stop that happening. Just an idea ?

Title: Re: Hoofies what do you think

The hoof goes all the way to the end inside and the rubber is very stiff I think I woud have trouble pulling it off with a set of pliers but as yet untested so I will see

I did think of putting a set of crossover straps from the bolts to the blue strap but I think dragging your toes will actually force the cover on more as it even protects the end of the spring if you look closely
and I havn't heard of anyone scraping the tip of the spring

And yes dave I might sell a few once tested

Also one in development with studs or spikes for grass so you cat slip them on to bock on grass and off for the journey home

I think you could be right Naz but she who must be obeyed is very forgiving whereas her sister and mum would never forgive me  ;D and they won't let me go on PJ's either  :'(

I honestly have no idea how much the will work out Dave but it is very time consuming to make them so I might do a template or a kit of parts to self assemble

I could also put any name on the label but as it's a thermal print on cotton it might not last long

As for the idea I saw so many good ideas for ways of fitting socks at london I just thought there must be a quick way and mixed a few together and having flu and no energy to bock left me at a loose end (and that normaly means trouble if you ask the wife)

It can take over your life my loft looks like Frankensteins lab

3 1/2 " screwcutting lathe, pilar drill soon to add a mill, hellis, bows, about 10 computers most in bits I mean the loft is 30ft long with work benches down both sides and it's so cluttered I can't find a clear space to work up there

In one word HEAVEN  ;D

Oh and 2 plasma spheres I just love those things I've got a set of plans for a jacobs ladder you know the v shaped poles with the giant high voltage spark running up it one day I'll make it  when the wife isn't watching me ;D

Long bows, recurve hunters, north american indian flat bow and a crossbow
I used to make them and do my own fletching (to the point making my own ash and pine arrows )
Laminating up the recurve hunter was fun glass fibre and rock maple with a mahogany handle

Post by: Jason on September 11, 2007, 10:17:03 PM
I think I might be onto a winner here Dave I am getting a lot of interest in them from lots of people across both forums and most of the comments are positive

I'm waiting for a delivery of webbing and bits so I can make a few up
I've also got a few ideas for changes I want to try before I finalise the design

The main bone of contention seems to be the Hoofies name It's had a Marmite effect some luv it others hate it but it will stay (I like it  ;D)

But the label will be optional and easily removed

After the Sister in laws wedding on friday I will be bocking with a vengance to test them so if all goes quiet after saturday morning you know they don't work and I'm in hospital again  ;D

Title: Re: Hoofies what do you think
Post by: Jason on September 11, 2007, 11:10:57 PM
Mine have been on for about 15 to 20 hrs of mixed bocking and not worn through yet (went to capital bocking on them) the truth is I don't know yet but the tread seems to wear quite fast and then the main rubber seems to last a long time

my only concern with them at the moment is how long they last, if i buy a pair will they last me as long as my tire socks, my tire socks only just need changeing now and ive had these since ive got them i think its 2 months and a little bit. and ive used constantly just wandered if this rubber stuff is better or would it not last as long as my tire socks... ??? ?

They have only been used for 15 hours because I am out of action with shin splints.  That said they are going strong still and the last hour was used by Kiola who was flipping every where.  A* so far though.

rawrr ok back to the subject jasons tire socks!! still havnt completely worn through yet their losing their tread etc but they havnt worn and ive done approximatly 2345675.65 hours on them

well london 7ish hours cambridge 7 ish hours ipswich 6 hours stowmarket for about 15 hours + bury for 5 hours and they havnt worn completely through yet

so yes they are awesome!!

i wanna know if they last longer than 2 months... XD as thats the time my tire socks last with use around about 1 month and 3 weeks of the time...
Title: Re: Hoofies what do you think
Post by: Bbmthbloke on September 12, 2007, 08:55:53 PM
but Dave what does weeks months matter if they are in a cupboard? or if used by a lightweight or some one who just walks in them?

tundraH and Paul both really 'bounce'. Paul has bounced for 40 hours. For many that is ten weeks worth!

Title: Re: Hoofies what do you think
Post by: x_Rave_Dave_x on September 12, 2007, 09:09:23 PM
this isnt about others if I am useing them up to 6 hours a day for two months nearly straight the wear will be more than if i use for 2 weeks, my tyre socks lasted me 2 months of constaint use with alot put into it jumping around everyday and running and stuff and now jumping stuff and everything i hardly ever just walk around only to get somewere if im tierd or with people... so im wondering if these will last the 2 months aswell or more as it all comes down to cost and time that the money is put into i can make 3 tire socks form 1 £7 tire if i get two tires its 3 pairs thats 6 month of constant bocking for me even more if i dont use them much.. its not  got anything to do about how long others have used them im wondering about me if jason says that they lasted him say a month of on and off use for me being lighter id assume they would last a few days or even a week more for me or if he used them for like 2 hours every day for a week and im useing for around 6 hours that means they will go within around a few days (just a example they hopfully wont go like that lol ) ive put thinking into these as im very interested in them with the time they can last and the money put into and got out of them and stuff i take a interest in this stuff i think i get it from my business teacher ^^

Wear on the rubber feet isn't just because of a particular reason but many factors come into play such as how hard you bounce, how much you use them and of where you bounce to name a few.

We have given Pro-Jumps to Pete who is doing the charity walk across the country. His found that some last him about 70 - 90 miles of running before they need replacing if his using them on gravel free roads but the moment he uses them on gravel type flooring if a stone gets in them then they start to rip away a lot lot sooner.

I think it’s the same with tyre sock and how you use them and what type of tyre you have used. Considering some of the posts I've read a lot of people find the tyre socks last but not as much as they would have hoped and then they are replacing them again. However no one will be able to give you a definite answer on how long they will last you as it's dependant on many factors that would be individual to you.

You may just have to take a "risk" on Jason’s hoofies and then decide if they are for you!

But reading what's been written about them apart from the durability you may consider that they actually provide better grip on different surfaces that standard tyres don't give and that's one of the other things you may want to consider

whats breathing?
Title: Re: Hoofies what do you think
Post by: Paul-Self on September 12, 2007, 09:58:01 PM
the bodily process of inhalation and exhalation; the process of taking in oxygen from inhaled air and releasing carbon dioxide by exhalation
passing or able to pass air in and out of the lungs normally; sometimes used in combination; "the boy was disappointed to find only skeletons instead of living breathing dinosaurs"; "the heavy-breathing person on the telephone

Breath is one of the few bodily functions which can be controlled both consciously and unconsciously. This is one reason why attention to it is common in many forms of meditation, specifically anapana. It brings us oxygen, more important to us than food or water; without it we would die in minutes.

Thanks Naz good answer

All I can say Dave is that mine have lasted me longer than the socks I made from cheep £10 mountain bike tyres but I am about 17 1/2 stone fully clothed so I tend to scrub more rubber off just like a heavy car goes through tyres quicker

I have never used my PJ's without socks of some form so I can only say that the grip is better than any tyre I have used and I had no grip problems in the tunnel to the toilets at speakers corner (I actually bounced a little there, ask Paul if you want a laugh I must have looked silly doubled up)

tundraH and Paul seem to have done more hours on them than I have (40 hrs Paul have you turned them round yet or are you still on side 1 ) and both seem happy with the grip level

The sock version gives 2 ends to use whereas the Hoofies only give one but look better
so the socks are better value but for some looks are more important

(I wear £3 tesco jeans to get me to pay £100 pounds for a pair of jeans I would need sedating and then I'd fight  ;D) but some people do

I have now changed my socks to Hoofies (for testing )so I am restarting the wear cycle again but if there is enough interest in Hoofies I will bring a spare pair to the next London meet that I go to and people can try them out

I must say that you are either light on you feet or have found a very good type of tyre as all my tyre socks lasted about 10hrs before they went through but like I said I'm hard on anything even shoes don't last long  ;D

You must be light on your feet Paul

Are you sure you didn't misspell your name and it's ment to be Paul-Elf as in Lord of the Rings I mean Legolas could walk on 4ft of fresh snow without leaving a footprint so you must be an Elf Lord are you any good with a Bow  ;D

Or the rubber could be long lasting (lets all hope)

Hows the leg and are you back on your bocks yet ?

I went out on them today

Jumping my home made jump pole I'm still a bit weak after the flu only managed about 2ft 6" on grass then a bit of general bouncing on the tarmac/concrete road boy am I out of practice then a walk/jog down the river and a bounce on the fresh mown grass (the type with the bits left of ) and yes they did slip a bit on that but what doesn't

The good news is that they didn't move on the hoofs at all in about 50mins bocking

The only strange thing is that they make a louder sound when when they hit the ground almost like a slapping sound

Oh and I've started work on the Studdies so watch this space  :D

A few people have asked me about Ball Park prices

I have put some thought into it and I will have to sell them as a kit (costs less to post flat packed )

to divide it up
Hoofies Full kit =2 rubber bases / 2 front straps / 2 nuts, 2 bolts, 4 washers /2 understraps / 2 top straps     Thinking around £15 + p&p

Replacement rubber bases around £9 + p&p (other bits should be reusable several times and will be available seperately)

Studdies same kit as Hoofies but with studs fitted to bases around £19 + p&p (depends on the price I can get studs for and how many end up on the final bases)

All these are ball park figures and it will be at least a month before I've finished testing and start making

Boy do I ache tonight

Took the Hoofies out for a 2 hr bock to Staines (local town) and did more bouncing than I have ever done

Then about 2 hrs later I got a chance to test the Studdies for the first time

Took me less than 5 mins to swap Hoofies for Studdies then off to the field it is dry scrubby grass so I expected it to be slippy but after getting up (yes I can do it again now) I spent the next 15 mins hareing about and jumping like a luney

I can't believe how much grip 6 football studs give I felt safer than on good tarmac

I'm going to get the wife to take some video next weekend hopefully put the jump up in the field
