Title: the easiest way to learn grabs and tricks like them
Post by: Nero on March 13, 2008, 02:04:27 PM
right afternoon all.
i have been missing around this morning trying some of the grabs and spinning tricks and think ive found the perfect way for you all to learn or practise them.
On your feet.
take two bounces as you would on your bocks, and try the trick, ive found its actually very easy to do all the bocking tricks in this way (excluding flips obviously, i run up for that on my feet)
but i honestly think its a great way to learn, yeah granted for a splitkick and such youll have more weight on your legs when bocking, but for those who just cant get the grabs and such give this a bash.
also anyone who can trick and is feeling energetic give it a bash and let me know what you think,
WARM UP FIRST THOUGH, dont want you blaming me for you pulling summat.

I found the best way to learn new tricks is to just concentrate on 2 different ones in a session and just repeat them constantly over and over again. I learned to do split kicks and double spring grabs one afternoon after drilling myself with them continually. Its boring in a repetitive way but you do have a sense of satisfaction when it finally starts to come together. Now if I am practising a trick on bocks I usually do 2-3 kanga hops then trick, 2-3 kanga hops then trick, until I mess up or run out of steam. Always decide first how many bounces you are going to do then stick to it. Learning tricks is essentially about discipline.

I love to learn to stand up off the floor  :)
But that means getting on the floor first ?
I know Jason's good at getting on the floor but I don't want to hurt myself getting there  :D
So other than falling over what is the best way to get on the floor ?

This is a little frightening when you first do it but Stevie & the team showed us how.

Ensure you are using knee pads then go down as if you are going to kneel  normally. As you decend lean back and you drop gently to the floor.

need to warm up and stretch your back befoer doing it but works really well

**splat** or a controlled decent as I like to put it. Actually...it's ok near a wall or rail..you can let yourself down and if you get knackered before you learn you can pull yourself up to. Both me and gixer failed last week but gave it a good shot?

Can any other no girls do it?

As you know the bigger you are the harder you fall !?
When your on stilts the ground looks a long way away  ;D

Good idea there Nero

I have only tried the tricks on the stilts I'll try a few on the floor

Much better than my approach to flips in order

1 never done any gym in my life
2 go to Essex gym meet
3 try flipping on feet (about 6 to 8 times) and not land one
4 put on stilts and run at mat screeming Geronimo ( not really not enough breath but I was thinking it)
5 just about land on my back 4 or 5 times
6 get tired and well you've seen the vid

Think I'll go your route and land one on my feet before trying on the bocks again (until I get carried away again  :haha:)

Keep the advice comming Nero god knows I need it

Jason  :Hoofies2:

Ps getting up is getting easier now but then I get a lot of practice the way I bock  :haha:

Its no a problem jason and thank you, i feel i pick the tricks up quite easy and i just want to help others do the same.
The way i see it, tricks/flips and such are more impressive than running fast, i also find them more fun.
Now if you want to impress someone to get them into the sport, your gonna show them the urban tricker, pro jump or "freestyle powerising" swebounce vids on you tube, not us lot running around just about staying up and perhaps throwing a few tricks and falls in to the mix ;D
but to get back on topic, has nobody tried to do their grabs/tricks just in their shoe's yet?

I found the best and easyiest way to learn how to do grabs and any tricks really is not to try and do the whole thing in one go like say with a star jump or a split kick slightly bring your legs apart more and more with each attempt dont try to pull off the full trick in the first attempt, and with grabs at first try not to actually grab the spring you could end up with a dendency to not let go of it soon enuf and could have a very bad landing i learnt that hard way lol was funny to watch glenn do it tho i didnt personally feel anythink lol. Its all about confidence and knowing your bocks really you need to know what you can acctually do and what you cant but start small is the main thing dont try for the whole trick at first work your way up to it

Yes, but find on a trampette is better than on the floor. If I do it from the floor its better to do it barefooted as I can get more elevation that way.

With regards to getting up, the trainers I have on the bottom of my bocks help me 10fold!!! as the way they are means when my leg is out infront that the entire trainers is contacting the floor! giving me so much more grip to push up on! will try to get a pic!

Ill try the floor tricks just as soon as my back heals itself (could prove to be a wait, I hurt it last week, and its stil tender! message to you all, never bock with a bent knee bar!!)

Had some good fun in Bradford, was trying to do front flips from standing onto a mat. managed to get my heels down on the 15th atempt but then felt very dizzy & sick  ;D

They have a long trampet that means you can bounce then trick again without stilts. Not got enough control for that though jester over rotated and had to run to stop a funny splat after trying a front flip.

hex, hope you are Ok , how did you hurt your back

Was tuck jumping and landed leaning backwards slightly, the next bounce I went backwards, and couldnt get my feet under me, so landed a full jump on my coxix, then my back, then my head  :damnit:  :censored: so Its a bit sore still! going to go to the medics when I get back to work and see if they can give me some uber strong pain killers!

Someone said their wife had a trampette. I'm guessing it's just an exercise trampette? Unless its a proper gymnastics trampette (which are used instead of a springboard... not a mini trampoline) I wouldn't recommend learning flips on it, as the legs can snap when you block. A trampoline would be much better!

Conclusion: Trampette = Bad  :P (unless it's a gymnastics one)
                Trampoline = Good  :thumbs:
                        Feet = Ninja! :Dark_Knight:

It was me that mentioned the trampette first and really I think the one I used was a cross between a tumble track and a trampette. Take a look at more or less any Bradford gym vids and you will see what I mean.

Well tumble tracks are awesome! Nothing like trampettes. So no problems there. :)

Trampolines are large circular or rectangular pieces of equipment as large as 15 ft in diameter or 18ft long.

Trampettes (exercise) look like miniature circular trampolines. Designed for bouncing up and down on the spot for an aerobic exercise. (Not designed to block on)

Trampettes (gymnastics) look like like miniature square trampolines. Designed to block on then propel yourself into the air, often over a vault. Much like a spring board, only more powerful.

Tumble tracks are a long, springy, strip of runway which you can run down and perform multiple successive flips and combos in a straight line. Similar runways have a trampoline like material or resemble long bouncy castles (air track).

All are perfect for learning basic tricks. All are perfect for learning flips except the exercise trampette.

Neo.

I've got to "DO or DIE" because of an ankle problem ( arthritis ) I have no power in the ankle joint and would twist it. It would be Bocks or nothing !?

Lol. Just speak to Lukman again. He'll have you jumping backwards over your own head within a week. ;D But if it's flips you want, make sure you call it free-running. Flips aren't Parkour! I could have taught you last week, but no-one replied to my Norwich Jam proposal. :P Have fun! ;D
