They are not cheap. Depends on the thickness.

2" thick ones are on ebay starting around £60 new
The really thick ones that are 8" deep are about £160 plus. Search for "gym crash mat" on google.

I think its easier to hire half a leisure centre hall with some other projumpers and use the mats there :)

hmm renting a hall could be costly ...and with nobody in my area with projumps tht would mean i have to pay for all of it...so ill prob save up an buy one...thanks anyway matt

I expect matresses are cheaper than crash mats though. Especially second hand ones.

Ask local schools if they're putting in an order anytime soon. Alternatively ask them if they're planning getting rid of any soon - if you dont ask you dont get!

Post by: freakazoid on November 22, 2006, 12:26:41 AM
hmm i dont think my school will give me them cos when i went they were still using the originalls....cheap gits

might jus see if they sell them on e-bay
Title: Re: crash matts

there is a company on ebay that sells them, i remember looking before but it was about 100 quid for one mat 6ft x 4ft and that was 4 inch thick.

To be honest anything under 4 inch thick is probably not worth it for this sort of activity.

If you're gonna use a mat to learn to flip I would seriously recommend having a friend "watch" for you which basically means if you're not gonna bail but miss the mat he/she might be able to either move the mat under you at the last second or even push you onto the mat.
Also remember your whole body is in motion when you go into a flip so i would suggest your final jump/bounce on your approach be about 1-2 feet from the mat otherwise you risk clearing the mat altogether and falling on the ground.
Use some common sense and take it easy :)

I've recently joined a gymanstics club (much to all of my friends amusment!) in order to get pro-jump fit and learn how to flip and stuff. After a few weeks of going there and talking with the coach they said i could bring my pro-jumps and train on them inside  ;D Not allowed in the foam pit yet though cos they're worried i'll go through their sprung floor  :-\ But in time i reckon i can persuade them.

So the moral of the story is get down to your local gymnastics place and drop lots of not so subtle hints about your pro-jumps until they give in!! The training helps loads anyway.

Could you use straw as a cheap crash mat material? Not like big, tight bails of it, but like broken up a bit, and stuffed inside a biiiiiig bag or air mattress or something?? I'm sure straw has possibilites as a crash mat material!!!
Once I can get a mat sorted out I'll post some videos of flip attempts.

you could use straw but it would take a while to fill those bags up. Dont seal them air tight though or they will go pop when you land on them.

I tried persuading my ANAL gymnastics club...nada! they're anal coz its been rebuilt with loto money and is one of the best in europe! Benfield in Newcastle on Tyne! but cant blame em man they hold adult sessions there 3 times a wk (A condition of their mega millions of funding) so the community do get to use it.
Weirdly tho, you can walk in there a complete beginner and use the place to flip around with NO training what so ever!!
they freaked wen i brought ma PJ's, all sorts of mis-conceptions bout damaging their beautiful gym and foam pits.

wen this stuff hits in the new year they'll have missed the exposure coz i'm using an arts centre i've padded out with a second hand gymnastics floor. Got it set up with a harness for flips!! 2007 will see lots of these facilities being set up and made accessible to alternative & extreme sports, so do give up guys, theres always a way round the problem. happy xmas & see you next year, Ricochet.

My local sport centre where I've had four trampolining lessons, suggested that I bring my Projumps in and the coach will get some crash mats out for me.   I've managed to do forward sumersaults on the trampoline, although he sticks a crash mat over it on the count of three.  Next lesson without the crash mat, then out come the double crash mats for me to practice sumersault on the stilts.

I guess the answer is to take up trampolining, and then talk about ProJumps a bit, then you never know curiosity will take over, and they let you have a play on them.  Local Gymnastics club had a full adult membership, so no go there, and not really enough room in front of the foam pit anyway.  Also they have a sprung floor which I guess makes it harder.

My advice is take to Trampolining and get the motion of foward and backwards sumerrsaults in a safe environment, then go for the Projump stuff.  Will let you know how it goes.

My lessons are group ones on two trampolines and cost £18 for 4 x 1.5 hour sessions each Thursday, next lesson 11th January 2007  ;D

In Hove area on the south coast.

Do they have any adult classes at the weekend? I cant find one in my area and am willing to get on a train at weekends to get to somewhere that does

Clever, but breaking and entering is highly illegal.
And all the crashmats are locked away in a store cupboard anyway.
