Three men walk into a hotel and ask for a room.
They are told that there is only one available but they will have to share it. The price is £ 30:00.
The guys agree, chip in £ 10:00 each and go up to the room.
A little later, the owner of the hotel realises that the room should have been £ 25:00 and he has overcharged the guys by £ 5:00.
He calls the bell boy, gives him £ 5:00 and tells him to take it up to the guy's room and give them a refund.
On the way up to the room the bell boy decides that he is in a position to make a little extra cash so upon arriving at the room he gives each of the guys £ 1:00 each and puts the other £ 2:00. in his pocket.
Question 1. How much did each guy pay for the room?
Question 2. How much did the room cost the three guy's in total.
Question 3. How much did the bell boy 'Pocket'.
Answers.
1. They paid £ 9:00 each. (£ 10:00 minus the £ 1:00 refund).
2. Between them they paid £ 27:00 for the room (3 x £ 9:00).
3. The bell boy 'Pocketed' £ 2:00.
But! If the guys originally paid £ 30:00 for the room then ended up paying £ 27:00 and the bell boy 'Pocketed' £ 2:00.
Where did the extra £ 1:00 go.... :Dark_Knight:

It fell out of the hole in the bell boy's pocket!  :nana:
-
The room cost £25
The Bell Boy told they it cost £27 so he could pocket £2
Each man should have paid £8.33 each ( one would have to add 1p )
Each paid £9 each 67p extra ( 3x67=£2.01 )
They paid £30
Bell Boy returned - £3
They thought room cost = £27
Room really cost £25 so Bell Boy kept £2
Where did the extra £1 go .... what extra £1 :Dark_Knight:

I don't know exactly, but is it something to do with:
the room actually cost £25, add the £2 the bell boy pocketed is £27, then add the £3 that the 3 guys were refunded (£1 ea.) and it's £30.
It's that last few lines that make you ??? confuzzled!
To be honest I don't really know if my explaination makes sense!

I think I have got it. It's just a little trick..here is how I added it up.

£30 total from guys £30 actual Bell boy £0

£27 total by guys £25 actual bell boy £2
Question 1. How much did each guy pay for the room?
£9 but this is irreliveant
Question 2. How much did the room cost the three guy's in total.
£27
Question 3. How much did the bell boy 'Pocket'.
£2
The important bit
What do you do to get this?
First you have £30 as the total. Divide it by 3 to get what they payed each..and thats £10
You then very quickly take £5 away and then add 2
You are then asked for a total.
You look at the £27 they payed and then the £2 and add the £2 on and think that should be £30
Now say I add an extra part to the story:
The guys wake up the next morning and have to leave the hotel. As they leave they spot the manager and decide to thank him for being honest and giving them the extra £3 he payed back to them.
The manager is confused and decideds to speak to that bell boy to see what happened. he admitted to pocketing £2.
Maybe this is confusing but what is going wrong is when you have the £27 and add the £2 on to check your total you really shoudl be taking it away because £30-£3=£27. They bell boy has taken £2 from that total.
Its just how it is worded.
