personally i recommend a bike inner tube first and then electric tape (colour of your choice)

the springs have got some sort of protection over them, looks like a inner tube but its sort of stuck to the spring itself. is this ok?

I wouldn't recommend either to be honest. I know some people use insulation/electrical, particularly for aesthetics, colouring etc, but i don't feel it does much extra protecting and gaffer just looks stupid on springs - always, cos it ends up a mess and even if it doesnt, its just wrong 4 the job.

A great stuff for it is hockey tape, its really nice, kinda tough, one roll should do a couple of springs if you do it right and you can still get it in a variety of colours. or a substitute is medical tape, but that only usually comes in white, but its a similar stuff

Gaffa tape doesn't look good but it does work well. I usually have some furry cover over it but I like the red and blue gaffer I have. It just not that neat. Fine from a distance, just has creases and stuff on mine..but I did doa  quick job. I'm more worried about protecting the springs than making them look good...

I duno where you get hockey tape but if you can get it might be better. Not used it myself.

I got it from a local shop, i couldnt find anywhere else that had it, but i'm sure it'll be easily accessible with internets

Bike inner tubes or bike tyres are better protection than tape. Tape DOESNT WORK unless you use loads, at least... not in my experience...

Go for the tube or the tyre.
