I know the Leeds mile have said no to bockers, so you might want to check before you just turn up! (And they did point out that bockers were on the advert - it didnt make a difference)

Is there a group doing the norwich 1 mile? I was just planning to do it on my own, but i presume we would do the mile together and submit the money in as one whole one in a groups?

Thanks for the heads up Becky, I've just checked with the BBC, and they wont be allowing bockers to take part at any of the Sainsbury’s miles at all (thats basically all the BBC organized ones). Which kind of puts an end to that :-(

Well my apology for the duff gen

Doubt it will make too much difference  but I ve just sent this to sports relief

Hello

I just recently entered the Sports Relief Mile. I had intended to compete on my 'pwerbocks', or springloaded stilts.  I was encouraged in this by the fact that they feature in a BBC advert/trailer for this event and has often appeared on TV. Additionally, I and many others have previously completed this event on said stilts.

I now find that for this event they have been banned. I am very disapointed and confused at this. I know of many other all around the country were planning to do the same. Indeed some , like me, have already entered.

May I ask you to  do all that you can to reverse this situation. I hope to look foreward to hearing from you soon.

Well I think that is very rich Q

If we are banned from using them perhaps they should remove them from the advert as it is misleading at the best and a blatent case of lying at the worst

There are avenues for adverts that are like this and as they are breaking some of the rules perhaps we should complain to the relevent authoritys  :Claugh:

Or maybe we should hold our own Mile in london only for bockers (if anyone would like to organise it I would do my best to attend)

I know I am being a little combatitive about this but things like this annoy me a great deal as they are happy to use us when they want to but won't take any risks to help us (Not very charitable in my opinion)

well all keep emailing sports relief and bbc

if no luck  then there is potential  for 'not the sports relief mile'  . loads r actually excluded....u can do it in a wheelchair but not on a sk8 board.

may take hit this year  but we want a commitment  to have the excluded looked at and a  way to 'include' atleast some next time

oo un when peeps email put your town...so they know this is national

I've sent sport relief an email too. Asking for clarification on the rumours of banned bocking.

Does this mean if we all get banned from sport relief we can all join the Banned Bockers?
Title: Re: Sport relief mile
Post by: asbestospiping on February 16, 2010, 10:38:41 AM
I'm afraid its not a rumor, below is the email i get yesterday after asking for clarification:

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your email.

Unfortunately we can’t allow people to powerbock the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile for health and safety reasons; it’s a decision we’ve had to take in light of a lot of individuals asking to do it.

Could you tell me which Mile you were hoping to attend though, as I may be able to pass your details on to the organiser and it may (although I won’t promise anything) be possible to get you all providing some entertainment in an official capacity.

I’m sorry that the advert has caused some confusion and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Sarah-Claire Swift

Events Team Assistant.

I've fired off emails to every one I know at the BBC to see if I can get someone with a little power to talk to and see what we can do. I have also replied to that email with this:

Hello Sarah-Claire,
Thank you for your quick reply, but I must tell you that I, as well as many fellow bockers, are sorely disappointed with this news. We have supported the sport relief mile for a couple of years now, and many groups were planning to attend various events across the country. Can I ask why the change in the rules this year? Especially as power bockers are featured specifically in the sport relief mile TV spots (Still running as of the 15th) our exclusion this year has caused some offense amongst the bocking community.

Our groups and members understand the health and safety of all participants have to taken into account, but we all bock in public places, without problem, and have bocked inside the Beaulieu motor museum, around the exhibits, among a busy crowd, also without incident.

Please can we work together to enable participation this year, I can provide risk assessment (We participate in many events nationwide, and have a lot of experience in this regard) for insurance purposes, and any other information that may be needed. I know from experience that the site of people on powerbocks can be inspirational and lift spirits of every one around us.

Thanks
Rob Cowie

Q got me thinking and I think a good way to teach them a lesson would be to do a mass bocking walk to collect for something like Help for Heros on the same day (or maybe the following weekend so we don't cause a war )  in the center of london

See how many people we can get together and perhaps invite a few of the soldiers that use false limbs (like the runner)

That way they might figure that they are loosing money by being dopey I mean whats wrong with setting us all off at the start of in a group so we don't get in anyones way

Anyway I think I might be boycotting Sport Mile for the meantime

The mile I'm going to do is hosted at the running track at my work, I'm gonna check if the work people will allow me to run anyway, if not, I'm boycotting and sending the story of how we were banned to every tabloid going.

I like the sound of doing something for Help for Heroes, a lot of my friends support it so I might be able to get some money. Though I would prefer something more than a mile, as that is rather short.

Okay, not spoken to him directly on phone, but he has given his plessing to me sharing his email for individual groups to get in touch and see if things can be arranged. So any groups wanting to take part, email Alan Pomroy <a.pomroy@comicrelief.com>

Dear Rob,

Sarah in my team passed on your query regarding the use of Powerbockers at the Mile events in March.

As I am sure she has already mentioned unfortunately, due to the health and safety considerations of all our other Milers we are unable to accept individual entries from people wishing to take part. Our ideal is to create an inclusive event where people can come along, take part in the Mile and have a great day out with their family and friends – sadly, on occasion we do have to put some limitations in place. Whenever we take these decisions we do it in conjunction with a range of stakeholders, including city councils, our event management company and our health and safety consultants and it is not taken lightly.

In previous campaigns we have arranged for organised groups of Powerbockers to take part in special Waves, starting just ahead of the main start. This has to be done on a case by case basis, and is not available at all of our events. It is however a potential opportunity for you and the wider Powerbocking community to get involved.

If this does apply to you, and you are interested then don’t hesitate to contact me and I can put you in touch with the relevant member of my team.

Kind regards,

Alan
-----
Hello Alan, thanks for contacting me, the Jurassic Jumpers were wishing to attend the Southampton event, but their are other groups across the country who were wishing to take part in miles near them, Leeds were one I can remember. Should I pass your email over to the other groups and let them get in contact with you individually, or work with them and you to see what we can arrange?

Thanks
Rob Cowie
-----
Hi Rob,

I am happy for you to pass my details across if that is easier for you.. in the meantime I will pass your contact details onto Clare in my team, who can look after you from here.

As an aside, I know that the organisers in Leeds are less comfortable with having Powerbocking at their event, but I am happy for us to talk to them again.

Kind regards,

Alan

Hi i have recieved this email from them

Hi Frances,

Thanks for your email.

Unfortunately, due to the health and safety considerations of all our other Milers, we are unable to accept individual entries from people wishing to take part on Powerbockers. However, if you are a part of an organised club/group it may be that we can arrange a special Wave at one of our Flagship events just for your group. Please contact us via the information line for more details. The number is 0300 123 5070.

Kind regards

Sounds like there is abit of hope!!

Unfortunately, due to the health and safety considerations of all our other Milers

so it's considerations by the other runners? i'm sure they'd love to have bockers

complete bo*****s if you ask me, but then again no-one is  :Claugh:

Does sound a little better but means we have to be in an organised group (not a problem unless your alone in an area)

I'll ask you DG  :Claugh:

Bio the Hanworth Banned are behind you If you organise something in the next year or so in london I'm sure you will get a lot of bockers
Also get your friends along they sound like the sort of people who will become bockers
You can always do 2 circuits if a mile is to short  :Claugh:

I've been refused use of mine at the mile my own work is hosting, 74 people are doing it, and me on Bocks, most of them are colleagues who know to stay the hell away from my newborn Bambi attempts at walking and running on my stilts. Yet not only have sport relief said no, but my works health and safety have said no.

We have not had information back from the BBC about the final details, but we should be doing it, as soon as they let us know, I'll let every one know here.

If you want to take part, you need to signup on the sport relief page, and at the end of the signup process, click the join team button, search for jurassic jumpers, and you will officially be part of our group for the BBC. Then we shall post details closer to the time of where to meet in Southampton.

Hi Rob

I hope you are well and having a good week?

I’m currently organizing the Southampton Sport Relief Mile so please accept my apologies that it has taken me so long to get back to you.

Having spoken to the council, we are happy for you guys to  take part in the event. If you could all join the same wave and let me know which wave you are taking part in then we can ensure that you are moved to the start of the wave (for health and safety reasons!). How many Bockers do you expect there to be?

Does this sound ok to you?

If you have any problems or questions at all please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you again for your patience.

All the best

Claree

Clare Forknell

Flagship Events Co-ordinator

Right, all of us need to decide on what wave we are taking part in: 1 Miles go at 12 or 12.30, 3 Mile runs begin at 12 and the 6 Mile run begins at 11am.
We all have to do the same wave, I'd like to suggest 3 miles, a good distance, easily doable for every one. Speakup if you want to suggest another, i'll be confirming the wave on monday 1st at 1500 gmt.

Post by: Spud on February 25, 2010, 08:33:32 PM
I dont know how things will be for you but when I did it last year we did the 1 mile but were allowed to continue if we wanted. 2 miles was easy, however, the course was not. Hence we only did the 2. This might be something worth thinking about it before you opt to do 3 miles. What if it is wet? What will the condition of the are be like after everybody has done 1 mile over it? if there is any grass it probably wont be grass later on, if there are any slopes  or hills they could be pretty dodgey.
Title: Re: Sport relief mile

I think maybe a mile to begin with and to see if we can carry on, I know that running three miles on stilts is going to be a bit daunting for me (even though I'm getting fitter, I'm not the most amazing runner/bouncer).

However, this should be really awesome and I'm really looking forward to it.

We did three last time - once round for an interview, once round to film the starting line, and once round so we were in the background of an interview with famous people... we were exhausted!

Wouldnt it be better to just do the 1 mile and run it?

It would be different

the point is to raise money, entertain, encourage healthy exercise and have some fun

Yes there is a point to training up and pushing 1self to run a mile rather than walk/lil jog 3.

But its v far from clear cut  and 4 some not an option

Oscar Wilde comes to mind ( a little) and his observation on dogs walking on their hind legsand the fact of the issue was ' not that they do it badly, but they do it atall' ( an approx quote  soz if Im not word perfect)

It would undoubtedly better to do the mile in a tee shirt and shorts  and not as the backend of a panto cow....but there is a reasonable chance that the 'fact' will not stop 1 or 2 people

Baring heart attacks and the like, everyonr who takes part is a winner.

So its all about taking part,  as many as possible , however 1 wants

is there anyone going to/wanting to do the leeds flagship mile cause if there is im going to try and sort out a special bocking mile for bockers. ive created a page because id set it up before i'd realised it was banned so if you are wanting to join some of us in the leeds mile join the sports relief group   Halifax Hoppers   (thats the area we live but we are going to leeds.) so far we have 3 members signed up and another joining us. (or you can sign up directly here http://www.mysportrelief.com/TeamPage.aspx?langPref=en-CA&teamID=52134 (http://www.mysportrelief.com/TeamPage.aspx?langPref=en-CA&teamID=52134) and send me a PM so i am aware, the more leeds bockers we get the more likely we are to be allowed)

also if there is already a leeds team signed up could someone inform me so i can join it.

Even before I set off on my stilts yesterday I was going to write this thread. But I now know I actually need to follow it myself.

Make sure your stilts are in tiptop condition.  Tighten up all your nuts and bolts. Check your hooves, is there enough rubber? After all the hooharr over health and Safty the last thing we all want is for some1 to wear down to the bare metal , slip and go skidding into the crowd on the second lap! Do all the straps and bindings fit snug and comfy?  You may find it a good idea to have a hankie or bandana with you and if you find something rubbing against skin, stuff said item in the way as padding.

If you dont know how to put something right, just post the problem, Im sure some1 will help

It was wet last time. went over the grass on chapelfield which was ugly second mile. we were allowed to cut a corner it was sooo bad. But that wasnt the worst. The worst part was the hill..um...near next, down part mcdonalds. Steep and greasy. Had to go easy there. Other than that fine.

If you login to your sport relief page, there is a tab labeled my team, I believe from there you can join an existing team.

Hey guys,

I'm trying to sort out one for Birmingham. I've phoned the organisers and they similarly said that individuals would not be permitted, but reasonably sized groups would be. I've got at least 5 people coming but I hope to get that number large enough for us to get our own "wave" for the run (we're down for the 3 mile run at 1pm).

If anyone fancies coming to Birmingham to take part (since we're not further than 2 hours from most places in the country) then let me know. I've got a thread here: http://www.projumpforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=4434.0

Bocking on the Birmingham mile IS APPROVED! :D

Quote
Hi David

Thanks so much for getting in touch about coming to the Birmingham Mile!

We would love to have you there for the event and can definitely fit you in to a wave. All we ask is that you let us know what wave you are planning on entering and we will let the marshals know who will ensure you are at the front of the wave – for health and safety reasons as you can imagine.

If people are planning on coming down on the day to sign up please  be aware that the first waves are full and to direct your team to the 2pm or 2.30 waves.

Does this make sense and is it ok?

Please let me know what you decide to do.

All the best

Clare

If anyone else is interested in coming, let me know ASAP!

Well, quite a few people who were on my "deffo coming" list have actually dropped out at the last minute, quite a disappointment. At risk of jynxing things, there's still at least 2 more people coming for a total of 3.

If anyone is thinking of coming to the Birmingham event there are two chances to meet up: either at 1200h (midday) at Selly Oak station car-park (there are two-car parks, but if you stand on the pedestrian bridge over the station you can see both places fine, or at the starting place at Cannon Hill park during the day. I'll be checking this thread regularly so just post here if you are coming.

Our wave is 1200, so you need to be there to check in well before that, I do not know where me and q will be until we get there, but we will be there early, so call us. Dont worry if you cant find us, the marshalls need to direct you to the front of the 1200 3 mile wave.

Really great days folks, I hope every one's events went well. I have become a walking reminder of the importance of wrist guards, even though I would of still broken my arm. I'm really pleased with the Southampton event, big thanks to everyone who made it!

I fell on my arm, the doc reckons wrist guard would of saved my wrist but not helped on my arm. But if I was wearing them I would of put my arms out, fell differently, and might not have broken anything. Wear wrist guards people!

Good advice mate and hope it feels better now (or at least less painful)

I always wear elbow guards too as I tend to slide sideways and land on my elbows they have saved me so many times I love em  :Claugh:
