I E-mailed germany to check if they would sell me a set of the cuffs
No way pedro was the answer (nicely put I might say ) patent problems
but they said they may be available soon
Now I'm an inpatient type so I've made my own it's taken me nearly a month of trial and error But I tried the mark 1 out last week end and just walked in the latest and last mark 3 (don't ask about mark 2 )
Anyway heres some pics what do you lot think
-
Another view
by the way all parts velcro together so can be washed
-
Ahh machine washable.
Very useful for getting those pesky blood-stains out :D
-
and do they work as well as the bar? r u going to put up details of how to make this?
-
Very nice, you should definatly put up a simple tutorial so others can learn from you.
-
verry nice :)
i congratulate you..
im gunna be making some verry soon (same problem as you)
could you give me some advice please?? :)
thanks
Demon
-
Wow
Looks fantastic, actually looks like its more comfy than the actual ones!
-
o wow, awesome, when are you gonna start sellin em? ;D
-
Right last first I won't be selling them (don't want a law suit from powerizer )
Sorry
I will take some pics and measurements of the parts and post
The only part that I had to use a lathe to make is a small nut behind the bar
this was to keep the bar close to the leg as in the mark 1 they were wide and
I knocked them together only made a 4mm a side differance but on each leg
I'll start tonight and try to get some pics up soon
And yes the seem to work as well as if not better than the bar (more adjustment )
And finally No Guarantees you all make them at your own risk they may be dangerous if something fails so please be carefull and if you do hurt yourself don't blame me
-
Hey
The only people that may tell you off is the Boecks if you sold some!
However a tutorial would probably be great for all those that would like them. They look excellent Jason.
The cuffs do provide more comfort however I would recommend using Pads otherwise you may get some sore knees!
-
Thanks Webmaster
Yes I agree about the pads I'll be using the Pit Dirt ones I got from PJ they make it easier to get the cuffs really tight
OK first the metal bits If you cant make these give up now you will need 4 of each
The bolt is a 6mm x 50mm long cut down to size
The washer is 25mm with a 6mm hole
the strange little nut can be replaced with a 6mm nut but makes the thing 4mm wider
The large square plate is next
-
I made the square plate of ally it's 40mm x 30mm x 2.5mm thick (approx )
I cut the plate to size drilled a 6mm hole in the middle put the bolt through and tightened a nut on the other side
now the hard bit if you take a bit of tube that is about 25mm ( I used an old socket set ) place the plate bolt head side down on a flat metal surface (a vice or similar ) put the tube over the bolt center it and hit it hard with a hammer it will form into the shape shown
then if you want to be able to angle it file the hole into a slot (only needed if you have a dodgy leg like me )
-
Side view
-
Next have you got a sewing machine as if not it's gonna take you a long time
I used an old singer hand cranked one as it can sew 2 layers of webbing and 2 layers of velcro all in one
The webbing needs to be strong but fairly thin dont use the really thick stuff or you'll never get it through the machine
You need 8 bits of 50mm webbing 150mm long burn the ends with a lighter to stop them running
You need 20mm velcro good stuff not the cheep ones 8 bits 150mm long of both sides ( hook and Loop )
-
now you cut a small hole in the center of 2 bits of web and using a hot bit of wire burn it out to about 6mm then the same in the other 2 but larger and oval to take the bolt head
next sew the loop velcro (the soft one ) to the 6mm holed webs as in pic and the hook velcro to the other 2
-
other side
-
now take one hook web and one loop web and sew them back to back but not all the way round Its hard to explain but you must leave a pocket to put the square washer into
-
A diagramme to make it clear the dotted line is where to sew and the pocket should make the square plate center on the hole
-
Ok thats one pad done now the bad news you need 3 more exactly the same
Next you slip the square plate into the pocket with the hollow to the large hole side.
push the bolt through from the side with the large hole put a washer on and run either the strange nut ( made on a lathe ) or a 6mm nut and tighten
It should look like this
Do the same with the other 4
-
Thats all the hard bits done
You now need four x 700mm long 25mm webbing
Four 350mm long hook side 20mm velcro
and four of those rucksack buckles get good ones and test them remember they hold you in and if the fail it could hurt
sew the buckles to the end of the webbing ( burn the ends first to stop it running )
Then sew the velcro to the side (not the center ) as in pic all four are the same ( don't make them handed or they won't fit )
-
The whole strap
-
The actual Cuff bit is down to your choise of material
I used a heavy nylon and a letherette backed fleece
Cut the nylon 100mm x 520
cut the fleece 140mm x 520
also 4 bits of 20mm loop velcro 400mm long
Sew the velcro to the face of the nylon as in pic the same width apart as on the 50mm webbing pads
-
Now you have to sew the fleece to the nylon If you do it inside out like a tube you can then turn it inside out and hide all the seems (If anyone in your house can sew the can explain it better )
I put 6mm foam in side mine and then sewed the ends shut
I also put 2 lines of stiches across the cufs to keep the foam still
-
Other side the fleece really makes it soft
-
Thats the lot next is the scarry bit I couldn't face cutting the hoops ( to much of a coward ) so I got some ally tube and bent and cut it
It is possable to cut your tubes and drill them to fit but remember if you get it wrong they are £18 each so do it right first time
-
OK lay the cuff fleece side down and fitt the pads
-
Another pic
-
OK
-
Next the straps velcro towards the middle so they can keep away from the bars later first one
-
Then the other
-
Thats it folks
I hope some of you make them But give it a day or two as I am testing them properly this weekend so if you don't ever see me again you'll know the did'nt work ;D
Any questions I will do my best to answer them
If you fit the cuff to your leg and then put your PJ's on it should give you an idea where to cut and drill the hoops but get it right first time or your'll curse yourself
as you pay PJ £18 for another one
Thanks for letting me use so much space Webmaster ( everyone says I'm long winded )
-
Wow
This is a really fab and easy to follow tutorial
I may try this and let you know how I get on :)
Thanks Jason.
-
wicked tutorial Jason
Im sure the members will really appreaciate it & i'm certain the brave ones will give it a proper go :)
thanks
-
hi Jason
I went shopping for all the materials needed for these cuffs today
Will get started tomorrow - tell you how I get on.
The weather was really bad here today so no bocking for me but did you manage to give yours a proper go?
let us know!
thanks
-
Thats a relly clever idea :)
-
I gave them a good try over the last two days
First strangely I did'nt find that they make me sweat I wear full length knee/shin pads and allways sweat under them but the back of my legs were dry
Comfort is unbelievable I stood talking to someone and forgot I had them on
The best bit is they are so adjustable by moving the pad position on the cuff and straps you can shift your weight back of forward and by moving the bars you can shift it left and right
It's the first time I have felt really ballanced on them
I even managed to jump a couple of ditches at a run ( the new tyre socks helped as well lots of tread they even grip on wet grass ) and climbed up onto a 80cm hay bale for the first time without falling over
The bad news I was so enthusiastic I tweeked my back again O well I'll learn one day
-
But i think i just buys a par of calf cuffs lol :D
-
But i think i just buys a par of calf cuffs lol :D
but just imagine how much u would be saving by making your own pair
they are very good jason, though I can find only one problem with them, If you fall onto where your knee bar would be you would actually be falling on the plastic fasteners on your cuffs so you could damage them purty easily :-[
-
At 80p each and 10 mins to sew them on not to bad
I wear the cuffs over Pit Dirt kneepads but the cuffs are thin enough to wear the pads over.
Also you could move the buckles further round by just unvelcroing them
I might try that next time I wear them thanks Pro-jumpingboy good input
And cost I think the final pair cost me about £15-£20 all in
Lastly I've got mine now unless you can get to germany You can't buy them (maybe soon PJ will get them But I wanted them NOW )
Call me spoilt
-
wow they look great .....and warm.....good tutorial as well
-
Thanks Freakazoid
Praise is always welcome from a fellow loony
I'm still laughing at your trampoline vid
-
well i aim to please....or be insane i foget which ::)
-
anybody tried this yet? How's your ones coming on GRS?
-
jason you mint...get that stuff on ebay you'll get mega bucks for it!
-
And then get all the cash I make plus some taken off me through the courts when the german manufacturer and the Boeck family sue me ;D
-
it aint gunna happen though...your not doin anything illegal your just sellin something you have..... ::) ??? :-\
-
No?
Only patent infringment, I think that one is a large fine or prison time
I'm sure someone here can tell me the exact punishment but telling people how to make them is no crime
-
well legally if you sell me a empty box which happens to have some cuffs in them and you actidently droped them in there they cant do dhit!
people do it all the time to lop whole the laws.....................enlockments are legally not permitted to...but still a chef bought boxes which happened to have freshfruit and veg it isnt a crime its useing your head...
-
You'll find keeping within the law means Jason's using his head.
You're just working overtime ;D
-
I love the idea and would like to make myself a pair. I agree with you Jason about the problems with patent infringment. You wouldn't get jail time but you could get taken to court and ordered to pay a fee to the patent owner. Plus all court costs would go to you.
What I would say is maybe you would be willing to make and sell just the metal parts for them. I loved the tutorial and really want to make some and I know that I have the skills to make a pair EXCEPT for the metal bits. The cut off screw and the washer are not a problem. The problem is the rectangular metal plate and the funny alternative to a nut. I can see how you made the plate but I can't think where to get a piece of aluminium of the correct thickness and size and I don't understand how you made the funny nut piece.
If you are going to the big London meet next month, any chance you could make a bunch of them to give out down there. I wouldn't mind reimbursing you for the materials and time it took you to make them.
If not then where could I get some aluminium plate. I'm not so worried about the nut bit. I'll just use a 6mm nut.
-
No?

I think unless they make this type themself ( If they do why not tell us ). then selling a cuff the just happens to be able to fit their stilts can not be a patent infringment.
After all what are " AFTER MARKET " and " CUSTOM " parts !?
The only problem you may they is demand you'd get !?
-
Actually Dark Night, it does.
Apparently Any attatchments for the stilts fall under the patent and you have to pay royalties to boeck. This happened to a member on the "other forum" who created some custom straps for the stilts.

Probably explains why no ones made any rubber foot that last better than the ones they make ::)
-
Sadly Dark they do make Cuffs for the European market but due to patent probs don't sell them to England also another Guy makes them (I think he did them first )
Mine are different but not enough to get away with (2 straps instead of 1 easier to tighten ) you can see them at Capital Bocking
I've got all the patent applications for another project I have been working on and they don't realy allow small mods to existing things or you could get round any patent
-

Actually the "other brand" calf cuffs have 3 interlinking pieces that grip, and then a softer comfort layer under this. As you can see here
(http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/9978/1003006sf9.jpg)
This shows the 2 thicker layers and then the 2 outer layers which interlink. Then the strap hanging down the back pulls tight around the whole set up.

So from above it looks like this
-
Kanga man
The ally square is an easy one just go to a decent hardware store and they sell flat ally bar or ally angle the thickness is not to critical so long as it is'nt to thin
As for the nut thing you don't realy need it (and they are a pain to make) I'm a bit knock kneed so any extra gap helps but If you don't bang your knees together (I did with the hoops) just pad the nuts that stick out so they don't catch
Try to get a thin nut the square ones from gutter bolts are ideal (plumbers merchant/hardware store)
Sprog
Thanks I have been desperate to see the cuffs close up (only had fuzzy pics to go by) my cuffs are quite different now I can see yours we'll have to compare them at the london meet
-
Thanks I have been desperate to see the cuffs close up (only had fuzzy pics to go by) my cuffs are quite different now I can see yours we'll have to compare them at the london meet
Sounds like a plan! :)
-
I will let you look at mine too, as I have a pair ;D. Sprog and I are in our own elite club at the moment.....
-
This is starting to sound like I'll show you mine if you show me yours ;) ;D
I'm starting to worry ;D
-
dont be afraid of our calf cuffs.....they dont bite ;D
-
Who needs cuffs !?
I went up the road with my new pads on and my legs are so tight fitting I forgot the do the str***e at the back up :o
Thing is I never noticed untill I got running and it started flapping about ! :o
-
Jason can I alter your design, for the culf cuff, as I have a idea, and want to test it out, will take me a month to work it all out and make it, some good equipment is needed to make it! Will post pics of it when done!!
-
Of course you can Sx
The more people put in the more we all get out, and the day I stop being open to new ideas is the day they plant me I'll look forward to the mod
-
I've made myself a new set of cuffs and moded the original hoops (I made new ones for the last set)
While I was making this set I thought why just one set so I made 3 now as I can only use 1 set I would be willing to sell the other 2 sets on if anyone is interested
The Cuffs come without the ally barsso you would have to cut and mod your own hoops ( Takes a bit of courage to tha a saw to them )
You need a blow torch, two bits of wood/MDF and a vice ( I will explain in more detail it's not hard just complicated and you can practice on the off cuts )
Any way here are the pics
-
And here
The top 2 are what you get and the lower 2 are how you have to modify the bars
I would be looking for £45 + p&p and they are officialy second hand but unused ;D
-
Jason, can you give the dimensions on a drawing of all metal parts, so I can see what size i am looking for, when it comes to bars, and nuts!! I will be showing pics and making a little tutorial on how my ones have been made, still working on the intial design, or what I want to mod on them, and what I can add, I have a few good ideas!! ;)
-
All the sizes you need are above the first pic of the tutorial (bottom of first page this thread)
The bars are the ones that came with my PJ's I just cut them into 3 bits (it takes a lot of courage ;))
They are 20mm dia and about 2mm wall thickness if you can find it everyone in England seems to sell 3/4" I made my first set of 3/4" but had to make spacers
The 3/4" tube was about £20 a length but you need a tube bender 20mm was available but was £40 a length (enough for 2 sets) so it would be easier to buy a set of PJ bars for £30 and not have to bend them
-
I am going to scout around for tubing, I know a few good places to get it cheap, uni being one of them!!
-
Make sure you get the right stuff mate you don't want pure aluminium it is so soft it's useless
you need an aluminium alloy like dural or similar that can bend without fracturing and anneals well for flattening the ends
Don't go for cheep over quality as if one of the bars snaps off as you land it could hurt a lot
-
have dural at uni!!
-
ohh, I hope that I can make a pair of these soon. They look awesome. And comfy.
-
They are very comfy and easy to make Leprickkon
So get sewing :Claugh:

Due to some unfortunate events, I was unable to post before today. Life seemed to have taken so many different turns, and I had not bocked for over eight months.
Inspiration struck in a unique way, and I began to walk once more, taller than most everyone I know. The bar, however, irratated me to no end, always rubbing my shin raw and finally, I had enough.
I remembered a certian genuis, whom I will not mention, (Jason) and his fabulous design for cuffs.
This week I used the tutorial he had so graciously provided, and I now have my own 'cuffies'.
The parts list was fairly complicated, since we dummies in the US prefer the standard system to the metric system. I had a devil of a time converting metrics into inches before I tossed out that idea and just found a meter stick.
The entire project came together at about $50 USD and that's including the gas for the trips to the hardware store.
Jason's odd nut was easy to replicate by using a shimmed 'tree nut'; used for furniture appearantly.
I constructed my cuffs as identical to his as I could, but due to some natural free-handed mistakes, I had to make a few adjustments, but that is for a later post.
First and foremost: Comfort. These cuffs are unbelievably secure, while still retaining an incredible about of pliance, and wonderous comfort. The fleece makes it possible to be worn without cloth padding to guard against the unfortunate skin-wearing.
Second: Safety. I feel in controll, my leg moves and responds instantly. The stilt foot lands exactly where it's meant to go.
Third: Cool factor. The color of all the material is straight black. More of a personal preference on this one.
I'll upload pictures soon.
and fourth: Cost. At around fifty dollars to make, they are extrodinarily low cost for the quality. I paid a quarter of the price to make my own, and I feel satisfied with the end result.
-
Well done Leprickkon
I would love to see some pics mate and like the idea of the Tree Nut I've not seen one of those (unless I know it under another name)
They are very comfy and secure arn't they

Why not buy calf cuffs for £25? Im i missing something here?
-
Why not buy calf cuffs for £25? Im i missing something here?
Because, for me, calf cuffs of any decent quality are £150 at the least, and that's not including tax or shipping, and I just don't have the ability to generate that sort of cash in a realistic amount of time. Besides, I'm saving up for a pair of exo skips too, so I can't break the bank now.
-
Yep JC you are missing something :Claugh:
Seriously though the cuffs you can buy are good and do the job
But if you ask anyone who has tried my ones they are so comfy you can wear them all day and not even notice them and they are easier to do up
Come to one of our meets and try them
Jason :Hoofies2: :CGEEK:
-
hey jason - do u still have some of those "ultra"comfy ones u sell??? :Ceek: :Cerr:
-
id love too but im all the way up derby :(
-
hey JC - am even a bit further - grantham - but that is nearby where u r - so if u fancy a bocking meet in nottingham, let me know
-
Definatly!
-
Not at the moment Mibsportler and time is a bit short to make them recently
But maybe in the furure
Jason :Hoofies2: :CGEEK:
-
no prob jason - just let me know when u v some ;) or i might try it myself when i v some more time (and I saw urs to see how it is done lol)
managed to get some moving footplates, and v installed them partly - hope to finish it next week
-
Post some pics mate
Jason :Hoofies2: :CGEEK:
