Title: Trying to convince the mother!
Post by: bitesize on June 25, 2007, 10:00:44 AM
Hi all,
Basicly i'm pretty close to getting some pro-jumps, i've got about £90 :), and i'm willing to save up, but i thought it would be better to get them sooner rather than later ;). However, I need some arguments that i can use to persuade my mum to lend me the last £45 ???.

Help will be greatly apreciated! :D

Tell her that you feel that without lots of exersize you think your going to turn into one of those obese kids that were always hearing about   ;)

And that her cooking is so good you can't resist eating seconds so it's really her fantastic cooking that is to blame for you needing Pro-jumps so its only fair that she pays a little towards them  ;D

how long would it take you to get the 45 quid together?  the answer may depend on how long you would have to wait.

Also where are you. If there is a meet comming up in your area  then you could tell her you would like them for that and that joining others is the best way of learning/having fun on these things.

tell her it will give you something positive to concentrate your efforts into and you can help by doin local charity events etc on them and it will also stop you being tempted by peer pressure to graffiti and do drugs etc
Title: Re: Trying to convince the mother!

but hang on if you say it will stop that sort of peer pressure --mum will worry about the people he hangs around with un simply not let him out

On a smiliar note, how do you convice your mum these things are safe to use (ie you won't kill/hurt yourself) so they'll actually let you buy them!!!

Pretend that you wanna take up somat REALLY  dangerous. Like underwater potholing, bullet catching, fire breathing ( actually im told thats a dodle  but ya mum will not think so) juggling ( but tell her you are planning to move up to knives) etc.  She will give in to P-J's for fear or somat worse ;D

Ha. lol. Fire breathing is really easy, apparantly one of my sister's friends learnt it one afternnon for a show that evening cos the normal guy backed out. But yeah... she's going to be mean on this, thinking of showing her what they are and some videos on youtube of people using them but NOT doing frips as that'll back them look dangerous. :P

google 'mr safty powerizers youtube'  'mr safty powerisers youtube'   i came across that recently its quite good. He is paid to do stuff by youtube and got given a pair of powerizers ( its the americian name for projumps   so not being disloyal) by an americian dealer.

Its 7 min a bit slow and plodding  but v safe and sensible goes on and on about how easy it is  and getting proper safty gear ;D

Im trying to convince my mum, me and my friend are both wanting a pair. My friend has managed to convince his parents but i havn't.

I had her convinced at one point and then decided to show her a video of how great they are and showed her a video of some people doing big jumps and flips and crazy stunts and then she decided not to let me have them becuase they are "too dangerous" so if anyone else is trying to convince their parents DO NOT show them a video of crazy stunts and stuff.

Any one got any ideas on how to convince my mum that they are really safe and let me have them ?
Title: Re: Trying to convince the mother!

louis  where are u? Maybe there is some1 near you who would let you try theirs? Then get filmed post a vid  and get her to watch then she will be 'omg  its u'

Point out the safty record is on a par with mountain biking and skateboarding and similar things. You will fall over - get cuts and bruises. Broken bones and the like are possible  but v rare ( ok ok i do know 4 peeps  who have ( well 1 they are waiting for the swelling to go down to do more xrays to be sure - some1 bent knee the wrong way ob sat).

But most of the injures on these things has happened to 'teenagers mucking about'  dont matter what teens are gonna muck about. Hey show her vids of parkour and free jumping and all those made flips between buildings    and point out you dont need the stilts . But if you did -atleast you would be nearer the ground ;D

lol good point!

But I agree best thing to do is get your mum to see you in action or maybe better to show her videos of people just walking and running on them. Remember most of the people doing "MAD" stunts on them are trained to do that and have used them for a while before they even attempt to do any stunts.

Thanks for your advice.

My mums on her own today (dads in work)
My dad always says no to things like this and always sticks to his answer.

Ill try pointing out how good they are and how dangerous roller blading is (which i do alot) we have ramps that we put out in the street and with enough speed we can usually jump about 6 ft !

If that doesnt work ill have to wait until my mate gets his pair and have a go on his but i want them for my birthday (6th sept) and my mate probly wont be getting his until after then.

Mums always know best ! Even when the wrong  :o
The more you tried the more likely she is to keep saying no !  :(
Don't talk about them for a week or two . then ask her that you really would like a pair and you wouldn't act stupid on them :)
Tell that there safe, more people hurt themself on bikes and that you'll always wear safety pads ( Which you should do anyway ! ).
If she still says no just ask nicely why she doesn't like them. Say that even police think they look like good fun safe 8)

WOOOO

I finally convinced my mum to let me have some.
I just kept talking about them but not saying "Mum can i have stilts".
I think it was my sister who eventually cracked her by making her feel guilty by saying "c'mon it's his birthday and your mean if you dont let him have them"

The stilts are amazing!
I ordered them the day before my birthday and got them on my birthday V. fast delivery.
When i got on them they was very scary but i soon got used to walking :)

Nah she wants a trampoline but my mum says its gonna kill the grass so shes trying to convince my mum to get her one. Seems like my mum isn't too keen on things that bounce lol. My sister is getting me to help convince my mum aswell, cos she says she made my mum get me the stilts....

And about the safty pads  ::)
Been on them for 3 days and still not had an accident (touch wood)
I do alot of skating and jumping over ramps and alot of biking so i have a good balance but yeh i really should get some pads cos its gonna hurt when i fall.

I was on the grass in the garden earlier running up and down then my mum decided to water the garden so i starting skidding which was scary so i just bounced up and down.

Im having great fun on them and my dad says when i get really good i should learn to juggle at the same time and walk round town and make some moneys or hand out leaflets but ill see when i get good  ;D

Well , I have to tell you parents are just not going to stop telling what to do . Im 43 and mine still get on at me.

Generally I agree with -but totally ignore them ( and they realise this but still keep on at me --its a kind of game we havnt managed to grow out off).

Now back to your prob --what to do what to do. It may be you will have to wait till your m8 gets some ( I think you said that was going to happen). Ask to have a go , get up and bouncing and show your parents -- a few times ( whilst letting it be known you still have the money  saved for them).

Sorry I dont know if parents are not like they used to be ( Oh my parents didnt try to stop me doing dangerous/silly things --normally encouraged it) or there is a more established culture of adventure sports over here in the SW.

I don't know Q, I'm not as old as you, in my mid 20's lol...

but when I was younger me and my friends we always use to play out, do sports, be more adventurous than I see children now a days are able to or willing to do. I don't know if parents are much more protective now or it's just that more kids tend to stay indoors & play computer games.

When I was younger we used to play a lot of outdoor games and forever running to the neighbours for footballs or tennis balls that had gone into their garden - I can't remember the last time a kid knocked on our door for their ball now!

unfortunatly it wasn't me who said a friend was getting them and i think the chances of anyone getting them round where i live is pretty low considering no-one has even heard of them.

ah well i could just threaten to stay in during weekends and play on a games console untill i go cross eyed. it'd kill me but if it got me closer to getting bocks i'd do it! lol.

thanks guys and i shall continue trying

Glad to know you've got all the pads and great that your getting a helmet !?
I know I have be told off for saying this but unless your flipping or there's a lot of over hanging thing near you there's no real need for a helmet, baseball cap or beanie would do !?

well i came home yesturday and there it all was (wouldn't have posted then but i was too busy out on them) and i can confindently walk and run on the spot a bit.  really like all the safety stuff too (reminds me of the guy in the halo games!) and i'm gonna get a helmet asap casue i'm not allowed out on the streets until i've got one! (it was the only negotiation between my parents and a fair one too i supose.) the main issue my parents had with it was how high up you were and i reasoned that pro-jumps arn't as high as a building and then jumping off it!! the truth is they gave in at the end. (i thought they were joking at first) but i just wore them down with showing them the forum and all the comments that were left here etc so  A REALLY BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE HERE FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!! At the moment i've been practising in my garden which has a nice solid section instead of grass and i'm really pleased with them and i'll try and get some videos up when i get time to film myself!

a big thanks again
