Title: 'Walk for Life' Potters fields park, June 1st 2008
Post by: Jelly on March 04, 2008, 10:09:32 PM
Well here is the new thread for 'Walk for Life' 2008!

Raising money and awareness for people living with HIV and AIDS in Africa and the UK.

This year the walk will be starting from and finishing @ Potters fields park, which is located next to what looks to be a 'sliced egg' building, which is actually where the Mayor of London and the London assembly are situated. I hate Ken livingstone by the way!!

The 10km walk in the beautiful summer sun and stroll past some of Londons most famous landmarks, as well as a couple of Pimms along the way, raising money for a worthy cause and being with ya bocking buddies, what else could be better??
The website www.walkforlife.co.uk has now been updated but you can still register, so do it now! I hope to see alot more faces this year and i dont want any excuses.

Jelly xx

Great!! Me and Q think it would be better if we all signed up as a group, so we all arrive and leave at the same time. We are also looking for a name for our group, remembering that there is going to be bockers from all over. Suggestions welcome! jelly x

Will you be setting up an online donations thing that was set up last year? If you do let me know and I'll give it a front page slot on the Projump website like we did for the children in need event earlier in the year as it may encourage random browsers to donate too.

These were the pics last year if anyone whats to take a look http://www.projumpforum.co.uk/index.php?action=gallery;cat=25

Hope u get a bigger turn out this year

I like Naz's suggestion of UK Bockers, keeping it simple is best. Make sure you get in touch with Crusaid and let them know you are doing it. Ask if it would be possible to have your own seperate start. If you can get say 80 bockers, it would look very cool if you get to go off by yourselves.

Why not wear the new Capital Bocking Tee?  Then your advertising the next event?

When the pix hit the forums  the colour alone will start to stand out and register and advertise that event. ( just a thought  so dont any1 go hijacking this thread hehe)

Thanks Jelly. I really would take you up on that offer but I have college in the morning and a deadline on that day. Proberly a 9am one too unfortunatly. I don't even think I could hand it in early as the 3 weeks before hand are my work experience and half term. I could find out if any lecturers will be in that week though.

Thank you for the offer though. Really nice of you  :-*

Keep pestering people, thats what I did last year and it worked! take your sponsorship to shcool/work and keep campaigning to get sponsorship. Remind people they can sponsor directly online.

Me too, but then again like I said from the start I plan just to put money in myself.
After all I can ask poeple to sponsor me to do something I want to do anyway ?

Yes of course you can, the whole point of this is to raise as much money as you can for the charity. It is irrelavent that its something you enjoy doing.

Latest update --the start ribbon will be cut by '4 poofs and a piano' or 1 of them I guess

Not alot else to add really

OO no yes there is    If you are in london go cruise the tube and check out the Walk for life posters there ---they feature Jelly muncher and ET on bocks with Alan Carr at last years event ---I was waiting for stragglers at marble arch doh so not in pix grrrr

Im still waiting for promised sponsors from people on facebook, as i too have a link, but i have'nt recieved any yet. But it does'nt matter how much you make as long as you take part as its all for a good cause!

think Ill pop in railway station after work today and get ticket. Ill aim to get to waterloo for 0945 ish too. So anyone comming from the south/south east maybe we group together at the station 1st and head of out of there by 10?

As for meeting. Prob a bit early for the beer tent  ;D.  So how about peeps head for the south East corner of the field --then all congregate around the 1st person to arrive?

All are welcome to PM me if you want my mobile number.

Re clothing andindeed carrying stuff. As little as possible. Remember the stilts weight 8.5 Kgish ---depending on make.  Thats like 2 bags of sugar strapped to each leg. You need no more reasons than them to get hot and sweaty.  So Id suggests shorts and a white tee, make sure there are no spots where the stilts rub--bleeding blisters just below the knees are not a pretty site!.  maybe a spare tee to change into after event. 1 maybe 2 minimal tool kits between lot of us. Mobile and money and water oh and sweetees.

Also you will get lots of requests to jump up and down and do stuff. Id advice we take it in turns. Last year I swear we did  an extra 3Km that wa in the field  before the walk even started

Ive prob missed it   but is there an estimated 'end of day' time?

I've got a kiddie-sized rucksack that fastens tight on my back due to the smaller size, so it won't bounce around when I'm moving.  I'm bringing a spare pair of socks and a FULL box of plasters, I think I'll be OK but if I have to I'll de-bock and walk a while, then bock up again.  Do they hand out water on the route cos carrying a bottle all the time will be a pain and also heavy.

I'm not doing ANY jumping up and down with the Cyberlox on, it'll knock me out  ;D ;D ;D ;D  If the weather is gonna be cooler then my Ghostbuster and inflatable Proton Pack are coming with me

Ok people 1 week to go!!  Im embarrassed as i havent raised much money.  :-[ Im going to send people on facebook a reminder to sponsor me, for those who are doing it dont take any notice of it, im just going to send it to everyone, saves me having to pick out the people who are taking part. Over 20 of us doing it, should be a right laugh! my mum and my sister will be my bag hags. lol. Got another letter today with a map of the route, cant scan it as i dont have a lead to connect them, grrr. So we are starting at Potters feild walking over Tower bridge past tower of london, walking walking walking till we come to St pauls catherdral past old bailey and up to Holborn, walking walking walking to we come to Bow street go through Covent garden, past the strand. Come to Embankment over waterloo bridge by the London Eye my new place of employment, past the national theatre, television centre, walking walking walking to the Tate modern past shakespears globe theatre, past London bridge the HMS Belfast and back to Potters field. . . .  And we are finished. Yay! There we will be greeted with a goodie bag, a medal, music, a BBQ and entertainment from Danni Minogue, Alan cumming and the 4 Poofs and a piano.
Check in is between 10 and 12, could we all meet before we go to the registration marquee, otherwise we may be starting at different times and we should all walk together! There we will get our free tshirt and a wristband to determine what time you will be starting, dont forget that water will be supplied half way round the route and at the end. So no need to bring a gallon of water with you! Dont bring sponsorship money as they have no where to hold it there, keep it safe at home. I might be cheeky and ask for sponsors on the way round the route from bewildered people, bewitched by our glorious height and sexy legs! Cant think of anything else to put at the moment, but to say pester all your friends and family one last time for sponsors. We are going to have a ball so Goodluck to everyone taking part. love jelly xxx

You can buy cheap £1 plastic rain coats from Poundland if it doesn't rain don't open it and save for another day. You can re-use it but it's folded in the bag better than you can put back in so leave it in the bag !?

I've not seen the weather for Sunday yet but if it's really wet and crappy then I won't be turning up, as bocking will be pointless, it'll be cold and miserable, and another very long day for me with all the train travel.  TBH I'm near burnout after this weekend at the London Expo, I'm very tired, Fuzzbutt work is piling up and I need to tell myself to have a break or I'll be doing my health no good at all, so an extra days rest on Sun will help.  If weather is good then I'll be there, but probably only 50% of me will be there as the rest will still be sleeping  :-\

latest weather update.  from windguru.cz.  There will be about 0.9mm of rain from 1600  but over a 6 hour period. Which basically means none!

However, temps are looking high--peaking at 23 degrees!! Forecast says lots of cloud ---suggesting hot and muggy.

This means taking on lots of water, slowly and steadily. Also dont bring loads of stuff. Water, mobile, money and a spare tee id advice.

Hey its going to be raining on the day, but dont let that put you off! I have bocked in rain and snow before and its no problem, unless you are the wicked witch of the west and you might melt if touched by water, lol. Bring a brolly if you must but im not going to bother, im just going to soak it up, like dancing in the rain but bocking in the rain. jelly x
You can buy cheap £1 plastic rain coats from Poundland if it doesn't rain don't open it and save for another day. You can re-use it but it's folded in the bag better than you can put back in so leave it in the bag !?

Also I have a few people sponsering me all on the paper forms do I note this somewhere on the WfL web site (I'm a bit thick about some sites ) or just bring the forms on the day/send them in after with the money (looks bad on the site on £0.00 and a fair bit on paper )

re money  dont worry fund raising goes on weeks after

the southern contingent is getting into waterloo 'around' 10 ( several lines west, south west and southern)  should be setting off for the field by 1015. Id expect to be there about 1030 or a lil after. Meet south east side of field.

Weather looking much better ( ie  no rain)

Bring sponsorship form and leave money at home and send it in later. Im getting into london bridge for 10.00am, so i can meet people there if they want. Waterloo station by the way is a long way off, its about a 30 to 45 minutes away from Potters feild park. So i suggest people make their way to London bridge instead as its only 5 minutes away.  jelly x

Gixer is making a good point about what you should/shouldn't wear ?
You may look fantastic off bocks but put a pair on and the bounce can pull and swing the out-fit about. No good dressing up as a pimp with big gold chains on you'd only end up hitting yourself in the face, wearing something more tight fitting works best ? That's why "Super Hereos" wear it !?

Even capes work well !
Or you could go baggy ( nice shorts Becky ) ?

i think a 'toury' roam of london should be in order a little after CB
I real enjoyed CB in London last year I'd not been to London for years.  :)
Maybe a TB (Tourist Bock ) would be a nice change to a normal bock meet !? I mean moving around more, and stop to take in the sights, draw a croud then leave  ;D
We don't have to run to get around faster than walkers ( poor ground crew ) and would show people bocking it a great fun way to get round. We could even beat rush hour traffic LOL

yep  brucie and Kiola did some filming with them last Jan  and Hammond did somat with them --comparing to other kit --was nice viewing I have to tell you.

yep Jelly,  walk for life was good at 10K . But if we think bit shorter maybe  ( 6-7 K) with better bock spots. with the end at a place we can eat. That would seem spot on.  it would also be a 'little' substitute for the few who want to,but cant make CB in Cardiff.

Doing it 2 or 3 weeks later than CB would mean that what stopped them may be fine then ( Holiday, illness, cash !? etc ). :)
