Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: aidanh1 on March 18, 2009, 09:06:12 PM
OK all you that are thinking that my website is crap and that its dead simple... THATS THE POINT!! Its ment to be simple

Now for all those that spotted the mistakes I made that I didn't coz I was tierd when making this website, ive now corrected all of the typos and spelling errors, ive also added the pages that will hold the pictures which I will be added when I have uploaded them and edited them.

The site will become better over time, I just want to get it up and running for now and then make it look good later on when i have more time, I am currently trying to learn new tricks and I dont want to be inside all summer recoding a website (thats a job for when winter settles in) so it will remain simple but working and easy to use for the time being.

Anything else you find wrong please tell me so I may correct it (sprog loves finding stuff I do wrong I think its his new hobby)
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: Locky on March 18, 2009, 09:20:23 PM
Calm it down Aidan nobody has said its crap.

In my opinion, you do not want the text to be centred. It makes it look like a restaurant menu.

Having just had another look I would strongly suggest you read through the text very very slowly. It still has some serious grammer errors and from an outsiders POV it sounds like it was written by an 8 year old.
I'd also not put Meets in the inverted commas. You make it sound like they are illegal or something. There is no special treatment or explanation needed. A meet is a meet, simple as that.
Please dont take offence. It's constructive criticism and I'm just trying to help you get the best that you can from your efforts.
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: aidanh1 on March 18, 2009, 10:40:24 PM
locky its quite alright i dont mind ur comments thats what helps me get my site better as proof reading which is giving somone else the chance to draft threw my writing helps spot things i havent spotted i have gone through and corrected any "u" or "ur" i have found and i will edit the meets bit, i do like the critisism and i take no offence

(sprog could try and learn to be more nicer and then id like him abit more too XD)

thank you locky mint :P i will make the changes

Done, pm me links to all NW related topics and I'll move them to your section

and stop doing things so fast

His the fastest website creator I know, I even gave him an "award" for it last year, but remember Aidan, it's not always a good thing to be rushing these things and if you took a bit more time with it, it would make a lot of differance and could look a lot better.

Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: Locky on March 27, 2009, 12:39:13 AM
me too. I thought you said you coded this yourself?

I dunno where you got the script from but its nasty.
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: sprog on March 27, 2009, 01:01:36 AM
And I thought the premade Java RSS script I used on the JJ homepage was bad :Ctongue:

I tried the form too, got redirected to this page:
http://sprinterweb.net/notify/1.php
and spammed with about 10 popups that even firefox couldn't prevent. Think I will run a virus scan now.

By the way you're now signed up to 200 different newsletters :Claugh:
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: Spud on March 27, 2009, 01:05:26 AM
Haha, I am using premade RSS java script on the EAs site too. But thats it for anything premade ;) I copied the code for the pop ups lol..

 :spudT:
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: aidanh1 on March 27, 2009, 01:12:04 AM
right the popups looks like the work of louis

i made this email sendr completly from html text and louis told me to put in a php bit that he coded himself since i put that in i get spammed with pop ups i have removed the php and now using my str8 forward html hopefully this has fixed the problem im sorry if this effected your computers at all im gettin to work fixing it now and yes i made the code myself apart from louis php bit he made that (so he says)
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: Locky on March 27, 2009, 03:00:56 PM
ok now it just tries to send an email from whatever program windows thinks is my default email program. A lot of people dont use email programs and just have hotmail/yahoo or some other online email accounts so what are they supposed to do?
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: Spud on March 27, 2009, 03:03:50 PM
I found the same thing. I did do the email to thingy bob on the EAs site but I dont use it, it annoys me when they come up. I have to copy past the email address from there...after it takes 3 mins loading up. i just left a plain text email adress up there.

Is that the best thing to do? genuine question.

 :spudT:
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: Locky on March 27, 2009, 03:51:55 PM
There are loads of free php scripts that can do this if you want a form. There are also php sites that tell you how to write your own.

Having a email hyperlink is fine, but it will either get spammed or used to spam other places with eventually (resulting in 100's of bounces coming to your inbox). I still do it though. Actually I think we have both on the WB site now.

Aidan, I need a nice NW logo for something I'm working on.
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: Spud on March 27, 2009, 03:58:28 PM
Hmm, Maybe a form. But I am not much of a fan of those. the spam was something I was worried about. Hence not linking it. it is OK how it is for now. But is something that can later be improved.

Aidan I really dont want you to take this the wrong way mate but I think your attitude into this new group sucks a little. You have bucket loads of enthusiasm but sometimes it seems like you are dictating every little step of the NWW whereas I feel it should be an open group where everyone has their input and co-operates with whatever they can do.

You post on here every time you change one line of html on your site and frankly, I dont think anybody cares. You use terms like "Site Owner" as if its something you'd sell in a market.
It's a community sporting group. By all means take the lead but dont think of it as your project, and yours alone. Dont make the decisions yourself, ask the others and give it a more community feel.
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: aidanh1 on March 31, 2009, 12:11:05 AM
i want people to join in tho

i want people to help me and i want input ideas but i get nothing i feel as tho i just being left to do it all which somtimes i dotn mind i post on here evrything i do in the hope somone will go oh i dont like that then i can change it to what the group wants i cant read minds

i no what you saying and i dont take it at all as ofensive as most of the things u post are generally correct

but how else do i get people to input im telling everyone what im changing then they can pick up on it if they dont like it i try my hardest

now on that note i have seen the group helping giving me nav bar idea and logo ideas and pictures and other stuff and like u said locky the meets should be in speech marks ive changed that ive deleted most of the site owner stuff and put me or i instead ive edited it alot trying to give a friendly look on the site and try and keep it nice and tidy
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: Callum on March 31, 2009, 08:27:58 AM
can i just put in here aidhan it would be beter fi you mase the layout more consistant because on some pages under the navigation there are pictures and on some there are not just a thought maybe take them out becasue they are in the pictures page

Also this group is about bocking. Going bocking, learning bocking, getting people bocking.
The website is only one part of it and to be honest, once its done, it can be left for a long long time with no design work needed.

If you would like the others to participate....ask them :)

i know what your saying callum, i have though very hard about changing the whole layout and making it easyer to use and more consistant but im doing that in the winter or when i get bored

for now i am going to focus more on the members, meets and T-shirts for the group as locky says this website isnt the group the members are i need to stop thinkin bout the website every second and focus more on the members that make the group :)

so just gonna leave the site (FOR NOW) and do that at a later stage :D

background animation doesn't work, and i get the message saying my computer isn't good enough:

3.2GHz
2GB ram
radeon mobile X600 (128MB)
firefox 3.0.8

if there's actually code to detect computer specs it's broken, that or the animation is horribly fancy :P

Um. I think my brain just got a colour overload. Did you design it yourself?

ok i HAVE to say something.

I'm also not running a computer that nasa uses so I am honoured to not see the animated background but I must ask Aidan WHY?????

An animated background is a distraction. End of chat. Period.

I am a little hypocritcal cuz we have fading background images on the WB site but I worked hard to (hopefully) get the right balance so its not a distraction...and on the flipside, we got some damn good pics on there.
You have multicoloured thingy that not even stephen hawking can see.

And the blue outline. ew.

the site will look betta after ive edited a few things XD

sprog do u like my colours XD hehe i went for a very colourful look but as u will see its fast clean and looks good XD and it has a database with everything saved u can even search XD hehe

but this is only test stages i can change the theme to anything i desire nearly XD

yeah, i must say, i get that 'Your computer sucks' message aswell..

I always thought this PC was pretty good... It would have to be to get over 400frames per second on Call of Duty 1

Most people only need 125 anyway... (it makes you jump higher :D)

Wait, there's an animated BG as well?

I can't see it...

I think this website is an improvement but there is still work to be done :) Random question. Why do you upload things before they are finished?

One other little thing..I know you founded the group ect ect but the website is about the group, advertising the group and bringing new people to bocking (I guess?) I know you made the site, but do you think a new bocker will find that information important? Will it mean anything to them? I just think the focus should only be on the group and how great they are. Groups do have "engines" but at the end of the day it is the people that make the groups what they are..and they are groups, not teams. Teams have captains.

hmmm good points spud

1. i uploaded the site before it was done so i cna get opinions on the themes (no point doing the whole website then finding out the theme is rong)

2. i dont beleive ive mentioned me in this site? ive talked about the group and nothing else ive talked about joining and stuff but everything is group related

Funny, it was still there when I checked after I posted.

I dislike the fading sidebar, it's badly implemented and looks out of place as the rest of the page doesn't fade on transition with it.

Why don't you actually build the site, as opposed to using a wordpress blog?

I think you need to stop playing with toys and start taking your groups website a bit more seriously.

You change it every other day. At the moment it says nothing to the public. No photos, no real explanation, not even the area you cover other than the north west....of something.

The colours are hideous.

Get something positive and I'll be positive about it but you wont get any gold stars for something that just doesnt do the job.
Clean and simple Aidan, thats all you need.

The JJ site isn't 100% ready for relaunch yet as the forum and gallery aren't live, but those are the kinds of things you should be aiming for. Simple, neat, and gets the point across.

YAY! you included the ss site in the list sprog, though that's still just a template, need to fill in the text for the rest of the pages, then sort out a proper banner/gallery preview image etc

but i agree, something simple like that with a forum behind it, no need for fancy php all over the place etc unless things get really busy

my FTP host has erroed and deleted my website and now it wont work :(

:D you mean you hit the delete button, should be a simple matter of re-uploading everything to teh correct places, and restoring the sql databases(if any)

all assuming you're using some sort of apache server, or something running cpanel, seems pretty standard these days

yer index.php is in the correct place ive checked them uploaded
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: darfgarf on April 19, 2009, 11:29:01 PM
well the site loads, so the DNS is fine, appears to be a completely blank index.php :P and hitting view source comfirms it, so might want to check that, or if it's supposed to do something fancy and load in stylesheets/whatever make sure the sheets exist and are being referenced correctly etc
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: sprog on April 19, 2009, 11:36:07 PM
It's not even php, when you try to load/save the source it brings up a html file, so clearly it's not accessing the right page as the site index.
Title: Re: NW Wallabies Website
Post by: darfgarf on April 20, 2009, 02:41:07 AM
that'd be the default savetype for a webpage? as it's just got blank, not even a 404 or about:blank, so it must be finding the file, or at least attempting to

Aidan, with regards to the large resolution images, in all honesty you only need pictures about 600x400 on the website, currently they're about 1200 x 900, which is slightly crazy to have on a website (unless it's something like deviantart or a graphical design site.)

Couple of other things I've noticed:

Quote
We apologies apologise for the speed of our site, but the server we are currently on is experiencing a little speed issue. Also, the high resolution photos slow down the database a little bit.

Thank you for your understanding.

We hope u you enjoy ur your visit, and come to see us bocking some time soon in the north west area soon.

The North West Wallabies are a North-west bocking group, we (Nothing like stating the obvious) bock around Warrington, Mancester Manchester and Liverpool. The group was started in March 2009, and we are all currently learning diffrent different skills and tricks in bocking.
If you want to try and catch the NWW please check the Events Callender Calendar on the sidebar.

Bocking in general is a sport that is preety Pretty new to the world and not many people know about it, the sport requires 2 peaces pieces of equipment and safety gear (2 stilts, helmet, elbow pads, knee pads and wristguards).
The peaces pieces of equipment used are the stilts, these stilts are made of aluminum alloy and at the back of them are a with big bent curved peace pieces of carbonfibre and fibreglass compound this acts as a spring on the back, which act as a leaf spring. When compressed these springs launch the user 6 ft in the air (with practise practice), when running the stilts only compress half but this is enough to get the user running 20mph! FALSE. Stilts can be fully compressed easily whilst running That's faster than an olympic sprinter (again with practise practice).
To buy these stilts the NWW recommend you go to Projump. You can locate Projumps by looking at our friends links on the side bar.

Yes I'm being pedantic but bad spelling makes me do this:
