knee straps broke after one bock...
« on: December 29, 2008, 09:31:05 PM »
Hi Folks,
I was stoked when I got supprised with my new projumps at crimbo!

My version has the knee staps built into the foam knee bar with a little fastener, not the "criss-cross" ones in the manual.

Unfortunately after reading all the instructions, strapped myself in and went for a quick jump. after about half an hour of getting my bearings, I looked at the knee strap behind my leg and saw it was all torn and shredded (but still hanging on a little), at the point where it gets screwed into the bar it's self. So since then Ive not been able to use them. Im going to give the company a call tommorow. Anyone got any advice?

Im sure they were on correctly? they were doubled up and fastened behind the knee holding it forward against the foam part of the bar.

Hey, welcome to the forum.
The strap shouldnt have "shredded" as you say. You have got the right idea phoning up projump, they should be able to help you.

The problem now and while it gets sorted is you cant use them  :-\ But in the mean time you could try securing your legs in other ways. Like by using the criss cross method in the manual by buying some webbing (20mm wide, 2m long, not glossy is possible x2 for each leg) Or making some quick release knee straps.

Most people use more than the original straps on the bocks just because it makes them feel more secure. I mean, if you did it it wouldn't be time wasted.

http://www.stiltmodz.com/
^^^ has a tutorial for knee straps.

But, Dont go on them unless you feel secure. In fact, You should probably wait until it's sorted

Hi notnic

I use cuffs now but when I used to use the bars I always cut the buitl in straps off and just used a length of 20mm nylon webbing as shown in the manuel and on here somewhere
Once you get used to tying it correctly it is so much better than the straps

Like Spud said the strap shouldn't have shredded and PJ are very good about things like this but I personaly would pop down to the local £1 shop and get a pair of those luggage straps (the soft ones are best and try for 20mm wide and I think about 1.5 to 2 mtrs long )

Have a search on the forum and there are several posts telling how to tie them

Thanks Folks!!

Ive been convinced about the criss-x-straps. Should I stil call PJ? Not much point bothering them if im going to get straps anyway.

And also, you say I can buy them from luggage shops. Can anyone be more specific about a chain that stocks them? I cant think of any luggage shops near me.

Cheers,
Nic

Yea, I would still call them, the strap shoudlnt have done that and they are a good back up.

He said you could buy them from poundland or similar, they are just normal bog standard nothing special type luggage straps lol, Or go to a sewing shop kinda place. Thats what i did but then they dont have a buckle.

OK a list of places I have seen strapping

You idealy need the softer type there are several thicknesses (not widths there are lots of them but you want 20mm) and the thinner stuff is normaly softer and easier to tie
If you have ever seen heavy Bias Binding it is very similar to that but stronger

Pound shops sell the luggage straps sometimes
some hardwear stores
E-bay
Dressmaking shops
Upholsterers
some big department stores like Peter Jones or John Lewis

And lastly has anyone got a pair they don't use anymore

Thanks for all the help on this one!

Tanya from UKGD/projump is posting me out a whole new knee bar to resolve it after I sent in some pics of the torn strap.

I live in hull and uni in york. I havent really looked for any groups near me yet but from the looks of it I dont think there are any/many groups nearby. When I start to get better and more adventurus I think I might join or start one.

i see pinhead didnt get a mention here
pushing quick release straps in all versions is cool, but you all still
miss one of the important things everytime...
buy a cheap buckle and it will break, the downforce used at the point
of the knee when bocking is incredible, a broken buckle can result in the twisting of the knee, which hurts like.... well it hurts....
as jason will tell you and agree, the inventor of an idea has generally tried
all methods in arriving at his final product...i tried dog collars, belts (which funnily work well) harnesses etc they all work to a degree, some better than others...i also chopped the original strap off once the idea was perfected..
but if you do make your own, at least use a heavy duty dog collar meant for
bigger dogs like bull breeds, avoid pound shops, one of my x-girlfriends
worked in one and ive never seen a good buckle once...
there are 3 buckle materials i have used...
you can get metal which are good, but mainly from usa around £2 each
nylon which i would avoid as some can be brittle and break..
the best practical and strongest buckle are made of acetal..
which is a military grade buckle used for their packs etc...
so when you check an item description, see if it says acetal, if not, dont go there.....after all, it is your safety....you can find them on ebay in all shapes and sizes and they range in price, from £1 each upto £6 some even have a light on..wtf...
nexus being the better of the brands to go for...trust me i know
if not, ask locky,becky,dawsome,ricc,jono,zeb,101. or any of the welshies for that matter i could list all 300 + i have made but hey, its a novel already...
be safe...make em safe... oh,  and a partridge in a pear treeeeeeeeeee

hey, im not moaning spud lol...its cool its cool
this will be hard to explain without pics but i will try...
when people use dog collars they cross at the front and back of the leg..
meaning, if a buckle breaks, they are left with one strap, but that strap is supporting one upper side of the leg and the other lower side of the leg meaning the leg can twist badly as the strap is diagonal.....ouch
now, when you attempt lol to make a strap like mine, the end of one strap attatches to the other strap after they cross.. ie the 2 top ends after the crossover in the centre attatch to each other, like a figure of 8, soooo if one breaks, you still have equal support around the leg with the other strap......
hmnnn did anyone get my meaning there....
yes they all will work, but some ideas can be a little more fatal should one break..... so i always urge people not to go cheap and make them properly...my ideas are all there for all of you to use, make your own or whatever, i really dont mind..thats why they are there..i will even help you if you need it...
the only time i do mind is when people copy them badly and sell an awful
and potentially dangerous product.. im proud of mine and wouldnt want someone thinking i made the dodgy ones....
make them good and sell them, then thats cool....after all its bockers safety that comes first and foremost....
i think you know where im coming from now peeps....
