Adding a signature to your profile
« on: February 20, 2009, 12:49:54 AM »
Hey!
This is a “tutorial” on how to upload a sig to your profile. I know it might seem simple to most of you but you have to learn somehow. I have gone really simple with it. Assuming you are a total noob. Might not be the case and you might already know most of it but I have helped people who have no idea, and I didn’t  year ago and something like this would have helped me so..here I go.

Step one:
Get yourself a sig! Make it, steal it, beg for it or whatever. Just have it ready!
sigs should be no bigger than 800x200 pixels

If the sig you want is already somewhere on the internet or you have made it online the first couple of steps may not apply.

If you have made it yourself put it somewhere memorable, name it and save it as a common image file type. For example, Jpeg (.jpg), png, .gif, .tiff.

Step two:
Upload your sig! If it’s already online skip...

You cant upload a sig directly from your computer like you can display pictures. It needs to be hosted online first. There are a number of places you can do this. For example, myface, imageshack, flickr ect. You can actually put it anywhere.  It’s just some places are fit for purpose.

For this I would recommend photobucket. It is what I use and although not that great for sharing pics with everybody it is ideal for this job. So sign up, create an album and upload. It’s not that user friendly but I think it tells you want to do at the beginning. So upload!

Step 3 (1):
Get the right URL! This applies to everybody!

This process is the same where ever your picture is hosted. There are other ways to do it and the right URL is often given. But if I show you this way then you will be able to do it wherever your picture is hosted.

Now your pic is uploaded have a look at it. Bring it up on your browser as big as you can. If you are viewing it as a thumbnail click on it, if you can still click on it do it.

The next steps are nearly identical...

Step 3 (2) (Internet explorer):
Right click on the picture. You will see a tab called properties, click on it. A box should then pop up. In that box will be a part called “address (url)”. That is the URL we are looking for. “copy” it! It is important it has an image file at the end. For example “www.spudisawesome.com/mysig.jpg”.

Step 3 (2) (firefox):
Right click on the picture. You will see a tab called properties, click on it. A box should then pop up. In that box will be a part called “Location”. That is the URL we are looking for. “copy” it! It is important it has an image file at the end. For example “www.spudisawesome.com/mysig.jpg”.

EDIT: The latest version of firefox makes this even easier. Simply right click the image and "copy image location".

Step 3 (2) (crome):
Right click on the picture. Hit “copy image url”.

Step 4:
Go to the forum and go on to your profile. You can do this by clicking on your name somewhere. Or clicking on “user info” located above where it would say “Hey Spud!”

Then you want to click on the bit on the left side called “forum profile information”. Scroll down and you will see where it says signature with a box next to it.

Step 5:
Almost there! But this bit is the easiest to get wrong!

For your signature to come up as a picture and not a URL you need to tell the forum that. And you do this by using “tags”. The tags needed are image tags that look like this:
Code: [Select]
[img]http://www.yoururlhere.co.uk[/img] remember the / in the second. Tags are like gates [open] [/close] you need to tell it where to start and begin. If you miss the / it will leave the “gate” open. This is a little complicated, and you don’t need to know it. Just need to get the tags exactly right.

Now you know what the tags are. Type them into the signature box and between them “paste”.
At the bottom of the page there will be a button that says “save changes” hit it and check out your profile!

Quick addition Spud - rather than using photobucket, if people don't want to sign up to something they can use imageshack - http://www.imageshack.us

Once the image is uploaded, it'll bring up a page with a load of different link types, scroll to the bottom and click "Show advanced linking", and use that link in the code :)

Oh, and whatever you do, don't use a bitmap (.bmp) file. It'll be massive. Jpg and Png are best, followed by Gif and Tiff formats :)

Thanks Naz :) Thanks Sprog 8)

I just checked imageshack out. It seems like a good solution if you just want to upload the one sig :) Benefit would be that you dont need to sign up. Downside might be that of you lose the URL you might not be able to see the image again.

One thing to note about imageshack is that when you go and click on the advanced linking it says DO NOT Use Link Below when posting. Use FORUM Links above for posts Don't be fooled, this is the URL you want and need. It also says please don't change the code ect. This is because in that code they have included a link to their site so if somebody clicks your sig it will go to their website.

If you made your sig online this will probably also be the case, so dont take the code given. Actually, you will have to probably take a code. And it will probably look like this or similar. Paste it into your signature box.
Code: [Select]
[url=http://imageshack.us][img=http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/153/pjf9st7.jpg][/url]What we need to do here is just get the right URL and add our own tags with none of the rubbish

The URL you need will be between some img tags, in this case the URL would be:
Code: [Select]
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/153/pjf9st7.jpgDelete the other stuff. You only want the that link. You wan tell it is the right one because it has .jpg at the end.

Now all you need to do is add your own img tags:
Code: [Select]
[img]http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/153/pjf9st7.jpg[/img]
And that would be your sig done  :)
