Wrapping the springs?
« on: February 28, 2007, 10:47:35 PM »
Me again! I read something on a bocking website that it was important to wrap the springs in hockey tape or the like? Is this true? OR are there any other safety measures i should be taking to make she my pro jumps dont just break?
Any help appreciated! THANKIES!

Hi again :D ..

wrapping the spring is normally quite a good idea.. you could use something like hockytape yes.. or you could use Electrical tape.. electrical tape comes in a variety of colours so you could do a design for individuality.. id recomend doing about 3 layers of it for optimum safety though.. do a few base wraps first ya! :P

basically.. yes it is a good idea to wrap your springs to protect them.. :P

the way to do it is continuously wrap the tape around and around the spring all the way to the bottom  and then back up again for your final 'coat'.. overlapping the tape about half each time ..

Hope i helped and didnt confuse you . .. :)

No im not confused- i found some nice stuff on ebay... Its so weird i'd never had thought i would have to wrap springs or put socks on the bottom of the pads- but i guess i dont want to be buying a new pair to soon- ive only had mine for about 4 days! How long have you been bocking?

welll its a combination.. you need to tuck and throw and get the hieght.. i recomend you do other bouncing sports like trampolining to get technique for flips.. then transfere flipping skill to your Stilts

Go for it! it is pretty awesome i agree- im a bit of an adrenaline junkie myself (much to the amazement of my peers) Free running is quite cool, you might have seen it in the begining of the latest bond movie, its really good for balance, but hurts if you fall... Hey you could become a stuntman type person lol!

You dont have the time to tape your springs ( which actually doesnt take that long) but you are thinking about taking them apart to spray them............ go figure

I used a bike inner tube from a 26" wheel, I got it for about £2 from Sainsbury!!! Cut the inner tube to size, and placed it on, I removed the rubber foot, bottom leg part, and did it that way!! I used washing up liquid to get the inner tube onto the springs!!!

i can imagin that when they are sprayed it will chip off anyway....unless you find a paint which sticks to rubber cos then you can just use an inner tube

Had a good fall recently, the inner tube saved the spring, and there is no damage to the bike inner tube either!!  ;D

Just do the area showing or else it won't fit back in. 5 layers of tape will do.

I just bought 3 rolls of electrical tape (2x Black, 1x yellow)
And did a layer a night, got 6 layers of black per bock and yellow hazzard tape hilights :)

I do recommend taping/protection though, After the first day there were already small nicks in the spring cover!

I think taping them is one of the ways to prolong the life of the springs, but its important you keep checking the spring for damage on a regular basis as well.
