Just tell her to lighten up :D
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room!

if it is diagnosed SAD, then get the light box, evidence shows they do make a difference.

other things to try are a good diet, the physical effects of lack of sun are lack of vitamin D, which causes fatigue and depression, so eat more fish and eggs.

I have seen a set of lights online that you can just put in the normal lights so it works all the time

Don't know how good they are but got to be easier than sitting in front of a light box

That is amazingly cheap, if it is full spectrum (http://www.wellness-shop.co.uk/true-light_full-spectrum_bulb.html), i know from experience that cccfl's that give off full spectrum, or uva/b are very expensive. I might get one to test.

Like all these things mate they drop in price as they become more popular

Will be nice to see the test results though just in case they arn't right

Too true Jason, I've not bought any uv bulbs for over a year (needed to prove something for a patent application, not SAD related) but i still have all the kit here for testing of the spectral output of a light source, only the most cynical among us would believe how many claims of certain spectrum output are false, or quickly dissapear with use, or even when warm.

Never mind the light boxes, they are only slightly effective and only any use if your house bound. By far the most effective cure for SAD is day light and a good diet.
Fresh fruit and veg or vitamin supplements if you have to. But get outside. Go for a walk between 11 and 1 doesn't have to be sunny though that will be a bonus. Try to keep skin exposed to the light, I know when it's cold this is hard.
Sitting by windows or in conservatories doesn't help you have got to be out in the fresh air. Every day if you can.

This is what my mum has done and she doesn't suffer from it any more at all!

Good luck, hope she gets better soon.

Growing OLD is compulsory. Growing UP is optional. OPT OUT!

hi  every one gets a little down over winter months this is a medical fact due to the shorter daylight hours
if it is s.a.d
a full spectrum light box will only make a small difference apart from in your wallet and you will have to sit in front of it for over an hour.whilst lisning to good music helps
it is a medical condition and it classifies under mental health  but dont think she is weird or a freak  i suffer from it too
best advise get out as much as possible in daylight just a walk a day helps quiet little spots or places of interest to her not the town or city that can be more stressfull
and of course heathy diet
and if she suffers badly at night a little choclate helps to relese endophins
hope it helps and she feels better soon

Normal ( old type ) of bulbs do not give off a full spectrum of light fluorescent lamps give off even less ( why automatic light settings on camera's muck up ). If you can wrap up the best thing you can do is go outside while the sun is about. Having the right diet also will help.
Here's a link about light box's
