shocked America booted off United Nations committees
« on: May 19, 2008, 10:27:29 AM »
By John Catalinotto found at workers.org

The would-be rulers of the world suffered two humiliating setbacks in United Nations votes in early May. They were paybacks for the extreme arrogance the Bush administration has shown towards allies and enemies alike.

The first rebuff was when the U.S. was voted off the Human Rights Commission. Washington had used this commission as a means of punishing those countries that dared to challenge its policies.

This year it had particularly targeted China and Cuba. It failed to win a condemnation against China but narrowly succeeded in getting a resolution passed against Cuba after twisting enough arms.

The U.S. also lost its seat on the International Narcotics Control Board. Washington had viewed this agency as a way to bring pressure against countries that fail to toe its line, coordinating this with the "war on drugs" that is really just a cover for U.S. intervention in Latin America.

The imperialist architects of U.S. foreign policy have grown so used to taking the UN for granted as a handy tool for aggression and intervention that they were stunned when the two secret votes in the 54-member UN Economic and Social Council went against them.

Four Western countries, including the U.S., had been running for three slots on the Human Rights Commission. France won 52 of a possible 54 votes, Austria 41, Sweden 32 and the U.S. trailed with 29. The secret ballot had allowed countries that usually fear Washington's retribution to vote against it.

In a similar vote, U.S. representative Herbert Okun was removed from the International Narcotics Control Board after two terms. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said the two losses indicate that "there's something happening out there." He added, "I think it's fair to speculate there may be issues related to how we handled ourselves, to how we position.'' Columnist Maureen Dowd was blunter. "EVERYBODY in the world HATES us," she wrote in the New York Times on May 6. "Even the Swedes can't stand us, for Pete's sake."

Why a revolt now? The major capitalist media list, for starters, the Bush administration's rejection of the 1997 Kyoto treaty on global warming and its unilateral rejection of the 1972 anti-ballistics missile treaty. There has also been the Clinton administration's rejection of a treaty to ban land mines, its refusal to support an international court, and the Senate's refusal to approve the nuclear test-ban treaty. And there was the attempt to sue South Africa to keep it from acquiring affordable drugs to treat AIDS.

There are so many other issues: U.S. hypocrisy on human rights when this country is the largest prison house in the world with 2 million inmates. Its arrogant preaching to the world even as its cops shoot down unarmed Black people like Patrick Dorismond, Amadou Diallo and Timothy Thomas and its courts fail to prosecute the killers in blue. And its self-righteousness on fighting drugs when the huge U.S. market for the stuff is what drives the production of coca, poppies and synthetic intoxicants around the world.

Many countries are also sick of Washington's attacks on socialist Cuba, which unlike the rich, capitalist U.S. guarantees free medical care and education for all its children and has been generous to others with its limited resources, providing doctors and nurses to Africa, Central America and the Caribbean.

Perhaps the weakening of the U.S. capitalist economy, the end of that raging bull market that seemed to drag everyone behind it, also made it easier to just say no.

Washington has always had a two-pronged approach to the UN.

On the one hand, over the past 56 years the U.S. ruling class has used the UN as a cover for its military interventions--in Korea in 1950, the Congo in 1960, against Iraq in 1990-1991 plus another decade of murderous sanctions, and in Somalia in 1992-1993. The Clinton administration even had the UN oversee the occupation of Kosovo after first relying solely on the NATO military alliance to carry out its war against Yugoslavia.

In a similar way, Washington has used bodies like the Human Rights Commission to condemn Cuba and, depending on the year and the needs of U.S. diplomacy, to attack Iraq, Libya, Sudan, China and others.

At the same time the U.S. has used its vote and influence again and again to keep Israel from being condemned for its brutal human rights abuses in occupied Palestinian territories.

But the U.S.--under both Republicans and Democrats--has also withheld support from the UN. It has specifically held back billions of dollars in dues as a form of pressure.

A grouping of reactionary U.S. politicians, led by Sen. Jesse Helms, has made a career of demagogically attacking the UN whenever it fails to be a completely subservient tool of narrow U.S. interests. Helms and others can be expected to use these latest votes as grist for a campaign to withhold some $580 million that Congress was about to authorize for UN dues.

Once Bush's foreign policy team finish licking their wounds, they'll undoubtedly come back with a strategy to bring the rebel nations to heel. But Boucher was right. Something is happening out there. The votes in the UN are just a pale reflection of the seething anger growing around the world at these lords of the universe who would privatize every drop of water, every inch of soil, while trampling down whole nations to get it.

“Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... WOW! What a ride!”

hear hear! :) It's about time! I know it's the least of their failings, but I never understood how they weren't punished for ignoring the Kyoto agreement!

The only good thing America ever did was Disney! :D ...and even that was linked to Hitler. :-\
Everyone's dreams sit aloft a rungless ladder. Some ladders are higher than others. Some are so tall they reach high above the clouds - but everyone can see their dream. Most people see that their ladder has no rungs and although they may talk about climbing it one day, seeing no way to get there, they eventually give up and settle for what lies beneath it.
The brave however, the wise, the imaginative and the strong of will seek out their missing rungs. They learn all they can about the ladder, they surround themselves with friends and family who would also find the rungs, and failing all else they craft the steps themselves with their own two hands from nothing. Sometimes a rung breaks and the person falls. Some of these people will fall too hard and lose the strength to climb again - Yet they feel comfort in knowing they tried. They became better for it. And they experienced things and witnessed sights upon the climb that those who sat forever beneath it will never know.
Then there are the special few who find new steps, or fix and climb again the ones that failed. Who eventually, through sheer tenacity and courage come to reach the final rung - Only they will have their dreams fulfilled. The extraordinary then build new ladders. These are the strongest people of all.

All I want is for them to learn what the Union Jack looks like (I know its not a jack unless its on the back of a boat, but never mind). As the Yanks have been shooting at out troops in their landrovers, thinking that our flag is rebel gang colours, Our lads have had to resort to buying hand guns from the local black markets, to detter the yanks until they can make themselves known, how c  :censored: p is that!!!  :banghead:

It can be call a Union Jack on land !
All so ...
No law has ever been passed making the Union Flag the national flag of the United Kingdom; rather it has become one through usage. Its first recorded recognition as a national flag came in 1908, when it was stated in Parliament that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag". A more categorical statement was made by the Home Secretary in 1933, when he stated that "the Union Jack is the National Flag". But it is still officially a flag of the monarch, rather than the country.

Nero, if your going to go on a rant against the U.S., it is much more impressive if you formulate your own words and thoughts rather than just relying on copying and pasting someone elses super-long rant because it sounds good to you.  My beef isn't with your rant, because everyone in your country is free to express their own opinion.  Oh... wait... that's right.. we evil ones were the ones who started that whole "freedom" thing.  My beef is with the fact that you aren't doing a good enough job when it comes to spreading the word about how vile and evil a place the U.S. has become.  We here in the States would really appreciate it if you would do a better job of that because there are Cubans risking life and limb at sea in an attempt to reach U.S. soil by using anything that floats -- and often things that don't float very well, especially when there are 40 cubans packed onto a little raft.  Apparently, you haven't gotten word to those people as to how better off they would be staying in Cuba.  Maybe, now that people in Cuba are permitted to buy a computer for the first time ever this week (if they can afford one) you will be able to warn them not to come to the U.S.  And while you're at it, please also warn the Mexicans, who are streaming over our southern border by the thousands each day, seeking a better life with opportunites for their families that they could never have under their present government - even if they have to do it illegally and risk dying in the heat of a tractor trailer truck container in order to get into this country.  And all the other hundreds of thousands (actually 1,266,264 in 2006) legal imigrants who come to this country for opportunities they cannot get elsewhere -- PLEASE WARN THEM!!!!  Well, at least do a better job of it.  Much thanks.

Maybe that has something to do with sanctions imposed by the US.....

Of course people from poor countries will come streaming into the US when they are faced with worse conditions in there own countries, who wouldn't? That doesn't make you an ideal country just a better option economically....
If your President hadn't made such a p**s poor job of running your country Nero wouldn't have anything to post.

Hulk of course. Best coaster ever made, the only B&M launched coaster... and it kicks some serious ass. The second half is a bit tame but I still love it... Followed by Revenge of the mummy, duelling dragons, and Space Mountain :)

The only reason people flee to America is because of this so called "freedom" you Americans "invented".  They hear that if you go to America you'll get a good job, and be able to send money to thier family. What they don't realise is that they will end up being exploited. Your government r***es these poor people and your people abuse them. Why do you think you let them stay? By the way, sorry for turning a bocking website into a cultural argument but it had to be said.

i bet Nero was wandering how long it would take before i got in this thread lol. yes Nero some people are touchy especially if you dare to criticise the mighty America no one has the right to do that surely. i mean you gotta love there morals and principals and problem solving take Cuba for example they imposed "sanctions" against them but then realised that due to the severity of such "sanctions" they could not call them sanctions as this was illegal unless you were openly at war with said country.. i know i know said the mighty America lets put some spin and just call it an embargo instead that will sit better with the global community. but lets still act out our subterfuge and propaganda we'll still spray their crops with chemicals to destroy them and blast them with propaganda from radio marti not to mention countless terrorist acts and the harboring of said terrorists. this happenes/ed not just in cuba but in any country that had a "left wing" leadership and shown more of an interest in people not profits Nicaragua under sandino and Chile under Allende for two other examples. and their spin happens still in the way that suspected terrorists "most of which have no evidence against them" are not called prisoners of war in a war on terror but enemy combatants so as not to have to invoke the Geneva convention, gotta love their work

Whilst America is not blameless there are examples of other initially socialist countries that have become anything but liberated.

What America tends to engender in its offspring is a fierce pride in its own beliefs and a somewhat cavalier disregard for others cultural ideals. This often comes from a lack of knowledge.

Where I do have concern is when America considers itself to be the founding father of almost all that is considered positive with regards to democracy and freedom,

With regards to both, Rome & Greece beat all of us to it.

Interestingly having spent and continue to spend time in America I find most Americans to be polite and accomodating if a little ignorant of geography and non American world affairs.

When meeting Americans outside of thier own Country, those that travel (80% of Americans do not own a passport) are quite often loud, rude and agressive.

Not sure why this is the case but is an observation from travelling in the US plus 3 other continents.

Grow old disgracefully
