Spring Skins?
« on: January 22, 2009, 07:15:38 AM »
I am thinking if its possible to use the vinyl skins they use for phones and laptops on the springs (maybe some tape or gaffer tape as base protection 1st)? Would be nice to have some unique printed designs on it.

Looking at some websites for skinning ideas.

The problem you'll find is that it will scuff very quickly and would need replacing.
So unless they are quick to change then a design is hardly worth it.
That's not to say don't do it just remember the con's ?

That is why most stick with a basic design, my pairs completely black :Dark_Knight:

and...How would they fit? The designs on the sites look quite detailed too. It's not a really bad thing but if you pay to geta  nice sticker on there I would want a design people would see clearly.

Look around here at what other people have done..I think a better option for you would be to make spring armor out of sweetskinz tires. They look great, protect the spring really well and fit on the spring perfectly once you have cut it to size.

I personally have furry covers and that also works like a dream and looks pretty coll too. i dont think thats the look you are going for tho. Toddy has used steering wheel covers which worked and then just the normal patterns with electrical tape..

I have missed other ways i just cant remember them  :Ctwitcy:

I have a pair S-rex that have yellow spring covers and got my hands on some holographic plastic sheets which I plan to cut to out and stick on  :coolS:
I can make loads so can change when they get scuffed up .

I was thinking of covering with another coat of clear tape after the vinyl skin is in.. Might just buy laptop skins and cut em up to stick on the springs.. I remember there is a shop doing customized skinning for various kinds of stuff.. maybe I can check it out

I'm thinking more along the lines of wet suit material as a cover, although road bike handle bar tape is quite cool and you can get some good designs.

wet suit type stuff like this:  http://lizardskins.com/products/?type=mountain&product_line=chainstays

handle bar tapes like these:  http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=25847
                                       http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=27997
you might need a couple      http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=25853
of sets of tapes but there
worth it
falling is proof your trying

No it won't DK. I've got sticker-decals down mine for capital bocking, covered with 3 layers of clear tape and they're pretty much still brand new, and have had the crap beaten out of them flipping and whatnot.
