Well, it turned out the crunching noise wasn't coming from the spring on the right foot. It was coming from the foot plate. The plastic near where the fastener side of the lower foot strap is attached to the rest of the foot plate was cracked. Today I was out in the High Street and it split completely. At least I managed to stay up. It made me realise how heavy they are to have to carry all the way home though.
