Bearing completley worn out.
« on: April 06, 2007, 11:42:00 PM »
Ok, i've decided that pictures explain things better than words so here we go:

As you can see the metal has worn a hole through the brass fitting and is now making an annoying rattle whenever i walk.

Anyone else come across this, and if you have how did you fix it?

I think im gonna send an email to projump and see what they suggest and see if they sell these parts.

Thanks Guys

Yeah, its just 6 months of wear and tear.
Brass isnt as tough as alluminum so 6 months of constant rubbing will most defintaly wear it away, but i was still quite surprised.
Im gonna email projump and ask if they stock this part.

The PJ's I got a month ago have got plastic (nylon I think) bearings instead of brass ones so they might be an improvement

One of my hobbies is model engineering looking at the problem from that view
the reason the brass bearings wore through is that the wrong bit was moving

the bearings are meant to be fixed in the ally frames and the steel liner is meant to move inside it but due to manufacturing tolerances you sometimes get a slightly larger hole in the ally and a smaller bearing and they rotate

If you put a bit of loctite between the brass bearing and the ally frame and grease the steel liner before you fit it you wont get the wear as shown
this won't work with the plastic ones so when mine go I'll just machine up a set of brass or phossy bronze ones

Ps in clocks a brass bearing will wear through a hardened steel shaft because the brass is soft enough to get bits of grit and dust embeded in it which act like emery cloth and grind away the steel (ain't life strange)
