Do springs become brittel in cold weather
« on: December 02, 2010, 02:06:18 PM »
I am doing an event for uni in january outside on the campus and i was just wondering do the springs become brittel in really cold weather. i;ve noticed normal fibreglass sometimes does but i wasn't about the springs as i have never bocked in winter

cheers

Not really, but I would not suggest storing them in your freezer.

For general use, they are fine. Just give them a gentle bounce to start off with.

Basic physics pretty much says that if the springs are colder they won't flex as much, but I wouldn't say they are brittle.

My bocks live in the porch which isn't actually attached to my house and stuff does freeze in there in winter (it was here when we bought the place and it is literally some bricks put on concrete infront of the house, there's an obvious gap between the bricks of the porch and those that make up the front wall of the house), so I usually bring them into the house to warm up by a radiator or something for a while before I take them out. If you keep them in the house all the time you can shove them on and go out bouncing straight away.

In theory the compressing of the springs will warm the springs up anyhows, so they will work practically the same as in summer. So as Locky said, "just give them a gentle bounce first"

Been reading this thread with interest only because my bocks are in the boot and I'm in hospital (not a bocking related injury or anything) with the keys so they're staying there until I get out of here (next Tues fingers X'ed)

I have recently seen "Click Heat" they sell a long one that goes down the spine to warm the person back up... so if you get a "Click Heat" in a nice tight flexible bag and tie it to your springs it will act as a spring guard and a warmer to help your springs loosen up or you could just use it to warm your springs up before you go bocking :) :Cwink:

(Click Heat are those chemicals in a bag, you basically break one chemical it then reacts with the other causing it to heat up, these bags are reusable all you do is pop them in boiling water and the chemicals separate, then you just click them when you need them :) )

Just a random crazy idea :)

I actually bought one of these recently but not for warming my stilts.

Thought it was a good thing to keep handy at gym sessions incase anyone strains anything.

Locky, its all good but you should put cold stuff on if some one strains a muscle or something. by putting a hot substance on it wont speed recovery as it dilates the blood vessels  :CGEEK:  haha A level P.E right there :)

Funny and quite likely considering they themselves would go brittle as the cool down.
