When bocking where it's dark it's hard to see where the hoof is landing.
I've used small bike lights but they never really gave me the light where I wanted it?
I've not tried this MOD out yet but it should light the hoof/ground better.

I don't plan to keep then on all the time just untill weekend so I can go out at night.

They look cool, but I think they are more show than practical.
The lights stick out from the footplate.. If you happen to fall forward, they will take the impact.
Also note, they only appear to light the general area of the hoof.
When your steps are 7 ft each, it is more important to see what is ahead.  Granted, not many people would 'run' in the dark ( :Dark_Knight:), and they will shine more forward when you step up...

More compact, and facing slightly forward at an angle would improve.

Plus if you bottom out they're going to take the impact from the hoof

I took that with a phone camera so it doesn't give a true effect of the light.
If you look at the picture my foot also sticks out the far.
The rubber stopper the hoof hitting it.
I did say I was just seeing if it was usefull ?

I was looking at getting some LED strips down the back of my springs (since they're a lot brighter than neons or cold-cathodes) but they drain batteries really fast. So the only good power source would be a some Li-Ion or Lithium Polymer battery packs, only catch is those packs are expensive, but are easily cheaper than constantly buying non-rechargables (and standard AA rechargables don't hold enough energy for extended use beyond 30 minutes). Oh... and they explode into a fireball if you get them wet.

Does anyone have any practical solutions for the power problem, or do they stick with AA-compatible (and less bright) illumination?

I do like the look of that footplate-mounted ground torch though :)

LED's don't drain power that fast !
The down lights I had last year lasted hours they had 20 LED's and used 4 AA rechargable.
I did have 60 LED versions on but I never had them on that long.

It's Xmas was I'm putting up trimmings again even better than last year.

The power in most batteries would never explode if they get wet !?
